Caitlin Clark is back in the WNBA after her successful gold medal campaign with Team USA at the FIBA World Cup. She came off the bench in all six World Cup games, leading the second-team unit during the tournament.

Before the World Cup break, Clark and the Indiana Fever were in fine form and had already sealed their spot in the postseason. They showed no signs of rust Friday night, posting a convincing 103-85 win over the Toronto Tempo at the Coca-Cola Coliseum.

Friday’s win was the Fever’s eighth in their last 10 games. They sit fifth in the standings and improved to 27-14. Meanwhile, the Tempo are out of playoff contention and sit in 12th place with a 11-30 record.

With a little over nine minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Clark was given a Flagrant 1 foul for flailing her left arm and hitting Isabelle Harrison in the face. It happened when Clark attacked the basket, and Harrison tried to block her shot. Harrison was called for the foul as well, but Clark got the bigger punishment.

Clark grabbed headlines when the Fever took on the Temp last month. She mocked Scotiabank Arena, which is also the home arena of the Toronto Raptors, for their lack of air conditioning. So it wasn’t surprising that Tempo fans enjoyed the Flagrant 1 foul call on the former number one pick.

Clark has had her fair share of technical fouls this season. This was her seventh technical foul, and now she is one tech away from an automatic one-game suspension. The WNBA will fine her $500 after her tech on Friday night.

The Tempo had no answers for Caitlin Clark

It was a fine performance from the Fever, particularly Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell. The two guards combined to score 61 points as they marked their third straight victory.

There was a lot of backlash during the World Cup as Clark found herself starting from the bench in all their games. Her fans argued that she was the best player on Team USA, and she showed why in her first WNBA game post-World Cup.

The 24-year-old recorded her 10th 25+ points and 10+ assists in a game this season. No player in the WNBA has ever done that before. She finished with 28 points, six rebounds, and 14 assists in 34 minutes.

While her seventh tech of the season overshadowed her incredible performance, it was another statistical milestone for the Fever guard. Her performances over the last few weeks have the Fever fans excited, as they have a strong chance of competing for the championship this year.

Kelsey Mitchell made WNBA history on Friday night

Along with Clark, Kelsey Mitchell is another Fever player who has been unstoppable this season. Their scintillating form has seen some view them both as MVPs this year. Like Clark, Mitchell also made history against the Tempo.

She was at her most efficient on Friday as she scored 33 points and shot at 71% from the field. In the third quarter, she hit a 24-foot three-pointer and passed A’ja Wilson for the highest single-season scoring total in WNBA history.

Mitchell now has 1,034 points this season, while Wilson scored 1,021 for the Las Vegas Aces in 2024. It was Mitchell’s 25th consecutive game with at least 20 points. With three more games to go, she’ll look to extend her new record even further. The signs look very promising for the Fever as both their guards are firing on all cylinders heading into the playoffs.
