The Houston Astros are stumbling at the worst possible second. On Sunday, they got swept by the Atlanta Braves at home. Following this, a frustrated Yordan Alvarez called a team meeting.

The 2026 season has been a topsy-turvy season for the Astros and the American League West in general. The Astros, the Texas Rangers, and the Seattle Mariners have all struggled this year.

The Houston-based side found themselves leading the AL West last month with a negative 65-66 record. With their series win against the Chicago White Sox at the start of September, the Astros were 72-69 for the season.

Since then, things have gone downhill for them. After losing the 3-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, they won a 3-game set against the Philadelphia Phillies. Later, they got swept by the high-flying Tampa Bay Rays.

Their 6-2 loss on Friday saw them fall to .500 for the season with a 77-77 record. A 6-3 loss on Saturday was followed by a 4-2 defeat on Sunday. This completed a 3-game sweep and left them 77-79. This was also their 10th loss in their last 14 games.

With the Astros’ downfall, the Rangers have taken over. The 2023 World Series winners have a 1-game lead in the division race. In the Wild Card standings, the Astros are 3 games behind.

The Astros now have 6 games remaining on the road. First, they will take on the Mariners in a 2-game series before traveling to take on the already-eliminated Athletics. Following their loss on Sunday, Yordan Alvarez called out a team meeting and dropped a bold quote regarding the sweep.

We had a team meeting about that. Basically, for us, it was three slaps in the face they gave us right in front of our fans, especially.

Alvarez is currently the frontrunner for the American League MVP Award this year. He is also chasing the Triple Crown with 40 home runs, 99 RBIs, and a .313 batting average.

Astros manager Joe Espada claims the team needs to get a good plan for the upcoming games

As the regular MLB season heads into the final week, the Houston Astros find themselves out of the playoff picture. The series sweep at the hands of the Atlanta Braves was a huge blow for them. With 6 games remaining, manager Joe Espada claims his team needs to get a good plan.

On Sunday, the Astros were leading 1-0 heading into the top of the 6th inning after a solo home run from Jose Altuve in the 4th inning. After 5 innings from Hunter Brown, Espada removed him from the game and brought in Bryan King.

This move did not work out well for the Astros. King gave up a walk, a double, a single, and a 3-run home run, which saw the Braves take a 4-1 lead. He did not record a single out and was replaced by Miguel Ullola. Despite a home run from Yainer Diaz in the 8th inning, the hosts were unable to avoid a 3rd straight defeat.

In the press conference, Espada emphasized that his side needs to come up with a plan to tackle the Mariners and the Athletics this week. He also admitted that this series against the Braves was not what they expected.

We’ve got to use tomorrow to really gather our thoughts and get a good plan together for the next week. No doubt about it that we need to bounce back and really dig deep and fight, because this series was not what we were expecting.

Joe Espada told the reporters as per MLB.com

If they fail, this would mark a second straight season where they will miss the postseason. Before this, they had reached the playoffs in 8 straight years, winning 2 World Series titles in 4 trips to the Fall Classic.
