Chicago Cubs star Alex Bregman was involved in a scary accident on Sunday. The third baseman got hit in the face by a foul ball. As per MLB insider Jeff Passan, he suffered multiple facial fractures but avoided surgery.

The incident took place during the Cubs’ game against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field. Bregman, who had opened the scoring with an RBI single, was standing on the on-deck circle in the 5th inning.

He was awaiting his potential chance to bat with 2 outs while Michael Busch faced Luis Mey. On a 1-2 count, the ball fouled off Busch’s bat and hit Bregman in the face.

The 3-time All-Star immediately headed towards the dugout. He covered his face with his hands while trainers helped him. Replays showed the ball hitting him around his left cheek.

Matt Shaw came into his place as the pinch hitter. The 32-year-old was later sent to a hospital for X-rays and CT scans. He did share an update from the hospital through a post on his Instagram story.

In the photo shared, his eye was swollen, and there was some bruising. He also had a tissue pad in his nose to stop the bleeding. He thanked the fans for their messages and expressed that he would be back.

He later shared another update and revealed that he was back in Chicago. Meanwhile, the team was waiting for reports regarding him before deciding their next move. As per Jeff Passan, he will not undergo surgery and is expected to be back for the postseason.

Bregman will not undergo surgery and is hopeful to return in the postseason.

While the Cubs have lost the division title to the Milwaukee Brewers, they are sitting atop the National League Wild Card Standings. If they beat the Miami Marlins on Tuesday or the Arizona Diamondbacks lose to the Colorado Rockies, they will clinch a postseason berth.

Alex Bregman has had a major turnaround this season

The 2026 season did not start well for Alex Bregman. He struggled in the early months, leading to many criticizing his contract. However, the third baseman has turned his season around in the second half.

On July 10, Bregman had just 7 home runs to his name. With the Cubs giving him a 5-year, $175 million contract, they probably expected more productivity from him.

Since then, he has adjusted his swing a bit. This move has worked out for him. He has gone on to hit 19 home runs, with 12 coming in August. He has also formed a formidable duo with NL MVP frontrunner Pete Crow-Armstrong.

For the season, he now has 26 home runs and 89 RBIs, with a slash line of .262/.352/.452. As the Cubs hope for a deep postseason run, they will want Bregman to stay healthy.

Speaking of the postseason, the Cubs would face the San Diego Padres in the National League Wild Card series if the playoffs started today. The winner of this best-of-three series will then take on the No.1 seed team of the National League in the National League Division Series (NLDS).
