Jannik Sinner finally confirmed rumors that he will skip the ATP 500 China Open, as he has not yet fully recovered from his knee injury. Because he won the tournament last year by defeating Learner Tien, he will lose 500 ranking points.

It’s unclear when he will return to the tour. It’s also unclear how long Sinner and his coach, Darren Cahill, will work together. Cahill wanted to retire after the 2025 season, but after his discussion with the World No.1 following the latter’s victory at the ATP Finals, he agreed to extend the partnership at least for this year.

Andre Agassi credited his former coach Cahill for Sinner’s powerful ball-striking, net game, and service game. But Agassi also believes that, like many player-coach relationships, Sinner too would eventually part ways with Cahill to listen to a new voice.

At the same time, I also think that every relationship between coach and player has its end point. A really good coach, in the end, almost makes his own job superfluous. Sooner or later, you teach what you know; you teach the player what makes him strong.

Andre Agassi said at the Laver Cup (H/T: Tennis365)

Simone Vagnozzi also coaches Sinner. Both Cahill and Vagnozzi joined Sinner’s team in 2022 and guided him to five Grand Slam titles.

And you learn from him too. For a certain period of time, that makes you better too. But then comes a point where things can change, and a new voice can bring something different. But Sinner and Cahill were extraordinary for each other.

Agassi is in London to captain Team Europe at the Laver Cup. Sinner has never competed in the tournament.

Flavio Cobolli on training with Jannik Sinner recently

While Jannik Sinner attended the Gucci show in Milan, many of his rivals are in London for the Laver Cup, including Carlos Alcaraz. Compatriot Flavio Cobolli, who made his Laver Cup debut in 2025, recently trained with him in Monte Carlo.

We joked around a lot, it was really nice to find him again on the court. Every time I have the occasion, I try to get the most out of the hours we play together. He’s one of the people who teaches me the most, I am always up for it when it comes to training with him.

Flavio Cobolli told SuperTennis

Before the Laver Cup, Cobolli competed at the US Open, where he lost to Alexander Blockx in the third round. It was the second time he lost in the early rounds of a Major this season after the Australian Open, where he suffered an opening-round exit.

But at the French Open, Cobolli reached his career’s first Grand Slam final, only to fail to end it in his favor, losing a five-set thriller to Alexander Zverev. He then made the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, where Arthur Fery knocked him out.

So far this season, Cobolli has played three finals. Before losing the French Open final to Zverev, he was defeated in the Munich Open final by Ben Shelton. Earlier this season, he clinched the Munich Open by beating Frances Tiafoe.

Sinner, meanwhile, has won the most titles on the tour this season. He first took home the first five Masters 1000s of the season, winning in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, and Rome.

After losing in the second round of the French Open due to a physical collapse, he skipped warm-up events on grass before defending his title at Wimbledon by beating Zverev. The knee injury forced him to miss the US Open, where he finished runner-up last year.
