LeBron James’ Reason for Joining the 76ers Was to Help Joel Embiid Win a Title

When LeBron James signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, a host of narratives were thrown around as to why he would abandon the safer situations in Cleveland and Miami to go to an unknown franchise.
The most obvious was that after Jaylen Brown‘s arrival, the team was stacked enough to be one of the early favorites to win the 2027 championship. That, to many, was the easiest path to another title.
Some labeled this move as cheating, while others felt it proved once again that the King was a perennial ring-chaser. The Cavaliers and Heat could also help him win titles, but not as easily and early as the Sixers.
Others felt that it was a strategic move since James will be close to New York City. Ties with the likes of Jay Z and others could help him expand his business portfolio after doing the same in Los Angeles. However, while on the Mind the Game podcast, the superstar shared what his true reason was.
One of the most important things is the big fella… And the only thing he has not done and that’s win a championship. I want to try to help him get that first one.
LeBron James said
The four-time champion did start by highlighting his already established relationship with Tyrese Maxey, and how he admires what Jaylen Brown does both on and off the court.
But his real focus is on helping Paris Olympics teammate Joel Embiid get his first championship. That statement seemingly echoes what Shaquille O’Neal said when he signed with James’ Cavaliers back in 2009. 76ers fans would be hoping that history does not repeat.
LeBron James details what Joel Embiid has done
After explaining what drew him most to the Philadelphia 76ers, LeBron James went on to detail what Joel Embiid has done and what is left for his legacy to be that of a truly great player.
He’s been the MVP of our league. Has a gold medal, All-Stars, signature shoes, bunch of money, beautiful family, he has everything. He has the city on his back. It’s been the process, you know, for what, 10 years, 12 years, or however long he’s been there. But I mean, I think it’s time now that we even dig even deeper into the process.
LeBron James said
This was the superstar reiterating to his audience and co-host Steve Nash what the Sixers’ big man has accomplished. He may have struggled with his health in recent years, but James believes it is only right that Embiid can retire in the future knowing he has a ring to show.
The 41-year-old added that he hopes he is the missing piece to the championship puzzle. The team is already built to win, and he hopes his presence helps them achieve the goal.
Joel Embiid’s health will be the only thing stopping LeBron James’ goal
No matter what LeBron James says, fans and analysts across the country know that the only thing standing in the way of another championship is Joel Embiid himself, or rather, his fragile health.

The 32-year-old has infamously missed more games than he was eligible to play in. Last season, even when he showed glimpses of his talent, his health stopped the Sixers from being swept in the playoff semifinals.
Sure, the addition of the four-time league MVP will help the team mitigate his absence. But when the postseason arrives, James will need the superstar big man to be available.
Embiid may have slimmed down and could be pushed by his new teammate to stay conditioned. But it might take a bigger effort from the franchise, restricting his minutes to ensure his body does not break down at the most crucial junction.
