After reaching eight consecutive NBA Finals from the Eastern Conference from 2011 to 2018, LeBron James decided to take his talents to the West for the first time in his career. Following a successful second stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers, he signed for the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent in 2018.
Many believed his move to the Lakers at 34 was more a business decision than a basketball one. The Lakers were going through a rough patch and missed the playoffs for five straight years prior to James’ arrival.
While he missed the playoffs in his first season, the King led them to their 17th championship in 2020. He may not have lifted a championship since, but he brought the purple and gold back into relevance.
After spending eight years with the Lakers, James did not re-sign with them at the end of the 2025-26 campaign and decided to test free agency for the fourth time in his career. A few weeks later, he signed for the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year deal and revealed it would be the fourth and final team in his career.
The President of the Lakers, Rob Pelinka, opened his press conference by thanking James for his contributions to the franchise for the past eight years.
I thought it would be appropriate at the front to express gratitude for the LeBron era here. Clearly, new team and new players, and that’s what we’re going to talk about today. But we as an organization are still grateful for the run that we had with him here.

He may not get a statue outside the Crypto.com Arena, but he turned them into contenders once again after years of disappointments. He treated the fans to one of the greatest moments in NBA history when he broke the All-Time scoring record in 2023, which was held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for nearly 39 years.
Pelinka credited James for reshaping the franchise after his arrival. While his legacy with the Lakers is debatable compared to his predecessors’ achievements, there is no doubt James was the superstar they needed after the late Kobe Bryant retired in 2016.
LeBron James’ exit from the Lakers was a mutual decision between all parties
When LeBron James announced that he would not be continuing his career with the Lakers, it sent the entire NBA world into a frenzy. He emphasized that he is prioritizing his happiness and his ability to contend for a championship as he weighed his options.
While speaking to the media, Rob Pelinka was asked how James’ exit came about in the summer.
Communications with him this offseason were held diplomatically, professionally and honestly, and we’re just so thankful for the partnership we had that continued until this summer, where the decision was made for him to play for another team. It was done amicably, professionally, gracefully.

There were a lot of rumors that James’ relationship with the Lakers management broke down during the 2025-26 campaign. However, based on Pelinka’s comments, it looks like everything was done in a professional manner, and there were no ill feelings towards each other.
Lakers kick off a new era following the departure of LeBron James
LeBron James was the face of the Lakers for nearly seven years. While he continued to defy Father Time like never before, it was clear that James needed more to get over the hump in a stacked Western Conference.

In one of the most shocking moves in NBA history, the Lakers traded for Luka Doncic in exchange for Anthony Davis at the trade deadline last year. The move signified a changing of the guard as Doncic took over from James as the centerpiece of the organization.
With James gone, the Lakers have officially kickstarted a new era with Doncic at the helm. Pelinka and the front office have built the roster around the Slovenian guard, who will be the team’s focal point heading into the new season.
The Lakers have made several roster changes since James’ exit. While their acquisitions have drawn mixed reactions, the Lakers will look to make a statement in the post-James era.
