The Dallas Cowboys traveled to the iconic Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for their Week 3 crunch game against the Baltimore Ravens. Dallas was selected as the home team but were 3.5-point underdogs at kickoff. It boiled down to a field goal to decide the outcome. Ravens Tyler Loop stepped up.

The Ravens took a three-point lead with under two minutes left. Brandon Aubrey tied the score for the Cowboys. Briefly, all signs pointed to overtime, but the Ravens quickly went down the other end, setting up a grandstand finish.

The Ravens lined up for a field goal try. Loop, a second-year man from Lucas, Texas, scored from 56-yards to deliver a memorable victory. Loop and the rest of the Baltimore Ravens team hit Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic “Siuuu” celebration at the goal line, with the crowd joining in on the fun.

The Ravens wouldn’t have selected a kicker if Justin Tucker were still around. However, Tucker’s alleged involvement in explicit business forced the Ravens to look for an alternative.

That being said, finding a replacement for Tucker was never going to be easy. During his prime, Tucker was considered the best kicker in NFL history. Baltimore took a chance on Arizona alum Tyler Loop, and that investment has paid dividends.

Loop’s game-winning field goal proves the Ravens can lean on him in high-pressure situations. Quarterback Lamar Jackson later said that he was confident the second-year placekicker would score.

I got all my faith in him, man. I was standing on the sideline, like your legacy start now, you know… I feel like, he has been facing that adversity. What a way to start your legacy in Brazil.

Lamar Jackson said at the post-match press conference

But the situation was very different on the final day of last season. The Ravens, who had played terrible football all year, had the chance to sneak into the playoffs with a win over AFC North rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Unfortunately, Loop missed the season-defining 44-yard field goal, and the Steelers went through instead of the Ravens.

Loop became the target of online trolls. The Ravens kept faith in the 25-year-old, and he repaid it with a win over the Americas Team. Loop has made 35 of 40 field goals (87.5%).

The Ravens were in control with a 24-13 lead in the third quarter in Rio. Dallas crawled their way back in with a touchdown of their own when quarterback Dak Prescott connected with tight end Jake Ferguson in the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown. Ferguson atoned for his previous turnover. CeeDee Lamb‘s conversion on the two-point try cut the deficit to 24-21. Aubrey equalized shortly after from 23 yards.

On the final drive, Lamar Jackson hit wide receiver Zay Flowers, and right before the clock hit zero, the Ravens used one of their timeouts. Loop converted the field goal, and the Ravens won 34-31.

I am hurting, they are hurting. It is a long trip [to Brazil], but no one cares. We also have a long flight back.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said

The Cowboys are 1-2 with defeats to the Giants and the Ravens. The Ravens are 2-1 with wins over the Saints and the Cowboys.

The NFL has been playing regular-season games in Brazil since 2024. The 48,000-seat Neo Química Arena in São Paulo hosted the first two games.
