Micah Parsons Disappointed in Vikings For Dumping JJ McCarthy After 2 Seasons

The Minnesota Vikings accepted a 2027 fifth-round pick in a trade that sent their former 10th overall selection JJ McCarthy to the New York Giants.

JJ McCarthy was supposed to be the Minnesota Vikings’ franchise cornerstone. The quarterback was supposed to be the building block on which they could build over the next several years.

After all, the franchise drafted him 10th overall in the 2024 draft, which generally means that they view him as the quarterback of the future. However, it seems not everyone was on the same page as former GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell was known to favor Sam Darnold. But the GM did not feel the then-journeyman QB deserved a major deal. Eventually, Adofo-Mensah lost his job, and Darnold led the Seattle Seahawks to win Super Bowl LX.

O’Connell’s apparent disinterest in helping McCarthy get over his struggles became even more evident when they signed free agent Kyler Murray. There was enough evidence that the Vikings head coach admired their new signing, and that, to many, was a signal that the Michigan alum was going to struggle to regain the starting quarterback spot.

Then came Jaxson Dart‘s season-ending injury, and the Giants sent next year’s fifth-round draft pick to the Vikings to land McCarthy. Now, he gets to play under his college head coach’s brother. However, one opinionated current superstar was not happy with the young QB’s former team.

I’m disappointed in the Vikings for that.

The Green Bay Packers pass rusher reiterated on The Edge that this era of the NFL has proven that many players develop later than they did in the past. That, and the fact that McCarthy’s injuries and the Vikings’ offensive line’s struggles made it difficult. Therefore, they should not have given up on a 10th overall pick this early.

Micah Parsons slams current-gen GMs for not understanding prospects

After first stating how disappointed he is with the Minnesota Vikings for bailing on JJ McCarthy after just two seasons, Micah Parsons then went on to speak about why this is another example of a problem plaguing the league.

This is where we say that, as football players, we need more guys who played this sport in general manager positions than guys who just say, ‘Hey, we watched a lot of football.’

The three-time All-Pro pointed out how the young QB’s success with the Michigan Wolverines was primarily due to the play-action schemes deployed by then-head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Any player going from that to a shotgun-heavy scheme is bound to struggle. Either the franchise should have selected McCarthy later and given him time to learn. Or they could have selected someone else based on what Kevin O’Connell runs.

Now, they have wasted a 10th overall pick, albeit due to some intelligent baiting from Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton. But despite the pressure of being a high pick, Parsons believes the Vikings should have kept JJ McCarthy for a while longer.

JJ McCarthy might rejuvenate his career with the Giants

If going by Micah Parsons’ analysis of JJ McCarthy‘s skills, it seems he has landed in the best place other than with former college head coach Jim Harbaugh. The New York Giants, under John Harbaugh, run a similar play-action-heavy system.

With a running back group of Cam Skattebo, Najee Harris, and Devin Singletary, there is no doubt that the Big Apple-based team will lean on their halfbacks.

That, along with the multiple tight ends and fullback formations, will allow their newest quarterback to take his time and learn the nuances of his new teammates. He may not have the pressure of forcing the ball to a diva wide receiver like Odell Beckham Jr. anymore, but still needs to adjust quickly.

However, this will be the best setup for McCarthy to rejuvenate his career. He has time until the end of the season to do that, as next year, Jaxson Dart will return to take his QB1 spot back.
