On Wednesday, the New York Yankees were swept 3-0 by the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Division Series (ALDS). Following their elimination, one of their former stars, Anthony Rizzo, ripped the team and claimed that “they can’t beat the good teams.”

In the regular season, the Yankees missed out on the AL East title again as the Rays finished 4.5 games ahead of them. This saw them play in the best-of-three Wild Card Series against the Boston Red Sox.

The Yankees swept their rivals comfortably in this and advanced to the ALDS, where they got another shot at the Rays. However, they suffered defeats in Games 1 and 2 and fell 0-2 down.

Only 10 times in MLB history has a team come back from 0-2 down in a best-of-five series to win and go through. The New York side needed a big result in Game 3.

That did not happen. They had a major 2-run game-tying home run go against them in the 6th inning due to fan interference. In the end, they lost 4-3 and got swept in the ALDS.

Offensively, the Yankees managed to put up just 5 runs across the 3 games. Some would say the absence of Aaron Judge played a huge part in it.

However, the Bronx Bombers did not have a good game defensively in Game 2. They committed 4 errors, the same number of hits they had. Out of the 4, 3 came in the first inning itself.

Anthony Rizzo, who spent 4 seasons with the Yankees from 2021 to 2024, had some tough words for his former team. On the Ross and Rizzo podcast, the 3-time All-Star claimed that the team had good pitching this year, but their bats fell short.

You cannot look at this lineup and not be optimistic, but they don’t win. They can’t beat the good teams. That’s how it’s been year after year. … We got to the World Series in 2024 and stabbed ourselves in the gut multiple times.

Anthony Rizzo said

The defensive errors the Yankees made in Game 2 led to some comparisons to their mistakes in the 2024 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. After the LA-based team won the series 4-1, their former pitcher Joe Kelly took shots at their opponents.

The relief pitcher claimed that the matchup between the two sides was a “mismatch from the get-go” and all they had to do was play regular baseball.

With this loss, the Yankees’ drought of the World Series title stretches to 17 seasons. This is the longest drought for a championship title in their franchise history.

Anthony Rizzo calls out Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s comments after Yankees loss

Jazz Chisholm Jr. and the New York Yankees suffered a disappointing loss on Wednesday. As the team was losing and on the verge of getting swept, there were some boos from the home fans at Yankee Stadium. Chisholm Jr. did not seem pleased with this and made some comments. Anthony Rizzo then called him out for this.

Chisholm Jr. has found himself in controversy and under backlash a few times in his Yankees career. Earlier this season, he made a bold statement and blamed the cold weather for his slow start to the campaign.

In the postseason, the 2nd baseman had just 2 hits in his 11 at-bats and failed to contribute much. While speaking with the reporters after their loss in Game 3, he was confused to hear boos from the fans.

It doesn’t hurt. It’s just confusing because it’s the playoffs and we’re trying to win games. So you’re booing a guy that’s playing trying to help the team win.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. said as per SNY

On his podcast, Rizzo called out his former teammate and claimed he appeared to be “lost.” He also pointed out that the fans in the Bronx have booed stars like Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton as well.

Jazz Chisholm’s comments after the game; just looks like a player who’s lost. … You’ve seen Volpe get ran out of town. You’ve seen Judge get booed. You’ve seen Stanton get booed. It surprises you that you got booed? That’s just not the right way to answer questions.

Anthony Rizzo said

A major question now looms over Chisholm Jr.’s future. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the end of this season. He has expressed his desire to return. Will the Yanks bring him back, or move on? Only time will tell.
