The New York Yankees had a night to forget on Monday. In Game 2 of the American League Division Series (ALDS) against the Tampa Bay Rays, they lost 5-2 while committing 4 fielding errors. Their loss sparked some wild reactions on social media.
In Game 1, the Yankees were blown away by Drew Rasmussen. The Rays ace pitcher gave up just 1 hit as the AL East champions won 1-0 and took the lead in the best-of-five division series.
For Game 2, the Yankees had Cam Schlittler on the mound. The pitcher had a stellar performance in his previous outing against the Boston Red Sox and was hoping to do the same on Monday night.
However, that did not happen. In the very first inning, the Yankees committed 3 errors. The first came from Ryan McMahon as he failed to collect a routine, chest-high bouncer at third base. This saw leadoff hitter Yandy Diaz reach first base.

Two batters later, it was Jazz Chisholm Jr. who committed an error. On a 2-2 pitch with 2 runners on base, Junior Caminero hit a grounder towards George Lombard Jr. at shortstop. The youngster fielded it and flipped it towards Chisholm Jr. at second base.
The second baseman, who was off-balance, tried to make a double play and threw the ball towards first base. Unfortunately for him, the throw went way wide.

With the Rays leading 1-0 later on in the first inning, Schlittler had worked an 0-2 count in his favor against Liam Hicks. He then threw a strike down the middle.
At first it seemed that the pitcher had struck out Hicks. Replays showed catcher Austin Wells had reached his mitt too far ahead, which resulted in catcher interference and Hicks advancing to first base.

In the 4th inning, the Yankees did tie the game at 1-1 with a solo home run from Ben Rice. Then in the bottom of the 5th inning, they imploded once again.
On a grounder by Chandler Simpson, Lombard Jr. hurried to make the throw. He though, was not successful, and the Rays extended their lead to 3-1. This, however, went down as a fielder’s choice instead of an error.
He was not so lucky later on in the inning. He made a throwing error this time after fielding a ground ball from Jonny DeLuca. He was the 4th Yankee to commit an error in this game.

The Rays put up 4 runs in the 5th inning and took a 5-1 lead. A 2nd solo home run of the game from Rice made it a 5-2 game in the 8th inning. In the end, the Rays were comfortable winners once again and took a commanding 2-0 series lead.

In MLB history, there have been 93 instances where a team has fallen 0-2 down in the best-of-five series. Only 10 times have teams been able to turn things around. In fact, the Yankees were the last team to do so, having gone 0-2 down against the Cleveland Guardians in the 2017 ALDS.
Social media reacts to Yankees’ loss in Game 2
The New York Yankees are in a dire spot after their Game 2 loss. They now need to win 3 straight to keep their 2026 season alive.

Fans on social media erupted after their loss on Monday night. Many users on X once again called for a change in the team’s leadership. Meanwhile, one user wrote, “don’t deserve to be in the playoffs,” and took a huge shot at them.
Check out that and some other reactions from X below:
They don’t deserve to be in the playoffs. Sloppy and lazy. It’s allowed all season and it showed.

Another pathetic performance and early exit in the playoffs!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly if getting swept gets someone fired . I’ll take the trade off.

The most woeful looking bunch. No character, no determination, not clutch, not sound. Just hr hitters built for May and to sell tickets, merchandise, and ad time.

It’s why I stopped caring as much as I used to. You do anyways as you age but this is Rinse,Repeat every season. Losing 14-2 Wednesday and getting swept would be best thing long term. But who are we kidding? It will be the same cast of characters in March. What an absolute joke.

The life cycle of any Yankees fan who doesn't remember 2009:

-Talk yourself into believing in Spring Training
-Live and die by six months of regular season baseball
-Make some good value moves at the deadline but never go for the kill
-Fall short in AL East, still talk yourself…
Unfortunately Judge is not winning a ring(here) and this offense is str8 ass, Rice,Cody,Jones, and Lombard are the only bats that should be back next year, simply pathetic

Should’ve been fired 3 years ago
The series will now shift to New York, where the Yankees will have Max Fried on the mound in Game 3. If they lose, their season comes to an end with an ALDS exit.
As for the Rays, victory on Wednesday will see them sweep their division rivals and book their place in the American League Championship Series (ALCS) for just the 3rd time in franchise history.
