Jalen Ramsey Admits There’s a Disconnect Between Steelers’ Players and Coaching Staff

Steelers star DB Jalen Ramsey urges coaches to create a better bond with the players.

Jalen Ramsey has played enough NFL football to know exactly what’s wrong with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Super Bowl winner believes the players and the coaches haven’t been on the same page through the first four weeks.

The Steelers began the year with a victory over the Falcons. Since then, they have lost to the Patriots and the Browns. Their only other win came against the Bengals in Week three.

The on-field spat between Aaron Rodgers and head coach Mike McCarthy raised ample eyebrows among the Steelers’ ranks. Although McCarthy and Rodgers both downplayed the heated exchange, Ramsey’s latest statement once again set off alarm bells.

Speaking with Ashley Wenskoski of PGH Sports TV, Ramsey urged the coaches to improve their communication and connection with players. Ramsey said:

The coaches have to put them [selves] out there with us so we can all get on the same page. There’s a little bit of a disconnect here right now, just with what we want to do on the field and how we play as a team and together as a secondary vs. just throwing a playbook in their hands and the coaches saying ‘This is how it has to look.’ That’s not how football works.

Rodgers lost his cool and shouted at McCarthy before a play in the first half of the Browns game. McCarthy retaliated with profanity. Spats between coaches and quarterbacks are nothing out of the ordinary, but for the Steelers, chasing a first playoff win since 2016, it’s a horrible look. Rodgers disagrees. He said on Wednesday via ESPN:

I think it is a positive. Player-led teams are the best teams. I think anytime you’re seeing the fire and the passion from all those guys, it’s a good thing.

Ramsey doubled down on his initial take by writing a long post on Twitter/X. Ramsey claimed he’s on good terms with every coach in the building. At the same time, Ramsey urged the coaches to make better efforts to bond with the players. Ramsey wrote:

I have absolutely nothing but respect for them ALWAYS, but the best way to getting acclimated with new teammates is being on the field with them. That’s simple. They have to hear the terminology we use ON THE FIELD.

Will Jalen Ramsey play in Week 5?

The Steelers have to sort out their differences quickly because Week 5 is upon them. They will host the Indianapolis Colts, who improved to 2-2 after grabbing a win against the Washington Commanders in their previous game.

This makes the Colts game a must-win fixture. But the team could miss several starters on Sunday. The secondary is very thin—Jamel Dean (ankle) and DeShon Elliott (knee) are out, and Ramsey (wrist) is questionable.

Omar Khan accepted a trade deal from Dallas for star corner Joey Porter Jr. Asante Samuel Jr. and rookie Daylen Everette could start against the Colts, depending on Ramsey’s condition. Khan signed Sean Murphy-Bunting and Terell Smith, but they still have to learn Patrick Graham’s playbook. NFL experience helps, but so does knowing exactly what your teammate expects when the Colts’ offense changes formation.

Jaylen Warren has been the Steelers’ best player with Rico Dowdle still in rehab. Warren has 309 yards on 55 carries. As for WR Michael Pittman Jr., he will miss multiple weeks after aggravating left foot plantar fasciitis. Once again, the light will be on DK Metcalf. The All-Pro receiver caught his first touchdown pass against the Bengals and his first 100-yard game of the season against the Browns.

But more importantly, the offensive line has to do its job. The sixth-ranked O-line per PFF must keep Rodgers safe so he can play his natural game. Magical things happen when Rodgers gets time to throw a pass.
