“That’s Like Shaq,” Erik Spoelstra’s Blunt Officiating Assessment After Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Fouls
Erik Spoelstra had plenty to say about the officiating on Giannis Antetokounmpo after the Miami Heat suffered another loss.

The Giannis Antetokounmpo era with the Miami Heat has gotten off to a nightmare start. The expectations were very high heading into the 2026-27 campaign, but they have struggled to live up to them so far.
Alarming signs emerged when the Heat were blown out in their first two regular-season games by the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons. While they did face two strong opponents, the way they were beaten became a concern.
Hence, the pressure was building on Antetokounmpo and his teammates when they took on the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday night. To everyone’s surprise, they were handed a 115-110 loss at the Spectrum Center.
Antetokounmpo was great in the first two games despite the humiliating losses, but he struggled in their third game. He was not able to dominate as he usually does because he was dealing with foul trouble all game. The Greek Freak eventually fouled out after only playing 25 minutes.
After the defeat, Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra criticized the referees, saying he thought his star player was getting hacked, but fouls were only being called on him.
I’m not making this game about the officials. I’m just talking about the physicality that he endures every game, and then he’s the one that fouled out. He doesn’t foul out very much. That’s like Shaq, you’re defending yourself, and so there’s a lot more physicality with stronger players than is allowed with guys that are smaller.

Coach Spo on Giannis fouling out: "I’m not making this game about the officials so everybody else can just kick rocks. I’m just talking about the physicality he endures every game and then he’s the one fouling out? – That’s like shaq" https://t.co/Y2Zn9dYU37

Antetokounmpo getting fouled out became a huge problem for Spoelstra. With two minutes to go in the fourth quarter and the score level at 104-104, Spoelstra’s plans were hampered after Antetokounmpo’s exit. Bam Adebayo‘s struggles continued as he was not able to get his team over the hump against a short-handed Hornets.
The head coach was left frustrated but knows the challenges that come with officiating Antetokounmpo and compared him to Shaquille O’Neal. After all, he did work alongside O’Neal during their time together in Miami.
Erik Spoelstra is looking for “inspiration” after going 0-3
Erik Spoelstra is widely regarded as one of the best head coaches in the NBA. He is currently in his 19th season as the head coach of the Heat. For all his success and achievements, things have not been great for the organization in terms of results in the last two years.
Hence, the Heat front office went all out in revamping their roster after missing the playoffs last season. Ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, the excitement was high, and with a superstar like Giannis Antetokounmpo within their ranks, many believed that their goal should be to lift the championship next year.
Unfortunately, nothing has gone according to plan so far. In fact, the Heat are 0-3 for the first time since 2007. Spoelstra did not hide his frustration after their defeat to the Hornets on Saturday.
Our system is our system. We can be that active at any point during the game. When we aren’t we’re choosing not to and paying the price right now. I told our team ‘we need inspiration.’

The pressure is starting to build on the franchise. The last time the Heat went 0-3, they had a league-worst 15-67 record that season. While that’s unlikely with Antetokounmpo at the helm, their slow start will only raise more questions.
Did the Heat sacrifice too much for Giannis Antetokounmpo?
After a disappointing end to their 2025-26 campaign, it was clear that major changes were needed for the Heat to contend for a championship. Therefore, they wasted no time in trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks in the summer.

The addition of Giannis Antetokounmpo immediately saw many analysts view them as one of the main contenders in the Eastern Conference. However, the Heat did give up a lot of players and assets to acquire the former champion.
NBA insider Brett Siegel believes that the Heat sacrificed too much of their previous core to acquire Antetokounmpo and have not yet built the right supporting cast around him.
The Heat gutted the most important part of their roster for Giannis Antetokounmpo and now, they look like the same Bucks team he was apart of the last few years that consistently underachieved.

It is still very early into the season; hence, there is no need to hit the panic button yet. However, Antetokounmpo joined the Heat to compete for championships, and the team really needs to show something more, and soon.
