Yaxel Lendeborg has shown glimpses of his talent and skill for the Golden State Warriors during the preseason. However, he was given a rough welcome into the NBA by none other than Luka Doncic.
Doncic is undoubtedly one of the league’s best players today. Lendeborg was tasked with guarding the Lakers’ guard for most of their season-opening game.
While the rookie did a good job guarding Doncic, the Slovenian star finished with 28 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists in just under 30 minutes. However, Lendeborg made headlines for the back-and-forth with Doncic throughout the game.
To add fuel to the fire, he called out Doncic for his flopping and constant complaining. Lendeborg went on to say that he “lost all respect” for the Slovenian in his postgame press conference. The young Warriors star has made a name for himself with his boldness and for not shying away from speaking his mind.
While Lendeborg has heard the backlash he’s received from NBA fans, he doubled down on his comments when he told reporters Doncic is “not Michael Jordan.”
I’m not afraid to talk to nobody. He’s not Michael Jordan. It’s fun trash talk. I feel like I did kind of take it overboard in the media, but, I mean, it is what it is.

Lendeborg admitted that he may have taken his comments too far in front of the media but has made it clear that he is not afraid of giving it back to his opponents. While there is a considerable hierarchy gap between Doncic and Lendeborg in the NBA, Draymond Green defended his rookie teammate and encouraged him to keep talking.
Yaxel Lendeborg on Luka Doncic calling him a “24-year-old rookie”
Luka Doncic may be one of the most beloved figures in the NBA but he is also a well known trash-talker. The two-time scoring champion had his way against the Warriors and let the Warriors rookie hear it after drilling a three-pointer from half court.

During the game, he called Lendeborg a “24-year-old rookie” and asked him to relax before shooting his free throws. When asked about it, Lendeborg dismissed it as it did not bother him.
The 24-year-old rookie thing? I’m 24, in the NBA, with the best job in the world, just moved my mom out to California. Like, I’m living the dream. I could care less. So I’m always gonna be myself. That’s the way I was taught, the way I was raised. I’m happy with life no matter what goes on.

The guys are over there on the couch talking bad about me like, come on, bro, I could care less what you got to say. What else do they say? The 24-year-old rookie thing? I’m 24, in the NBA, with the best job in the world, just moved my mom out to California. Like, I’m living the dream. I could care less, you know what I mean? So I’m always gonna be myself. The Warriors drafted 24-year-old Yaxel Lendeborg with their 11th pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. It was their highest draft pick in the last five years and they decided to use it on a rookie with some experience.
Steve Kerr calls out Yaxel Lendeborg’s weakness after another loss
The Warriors are nowhere near championship contenders as presently constructed. They failed to make any big moves in the summer and will most likely be a Play-In team if they do not make any big moves at the trade deadline.
It has been a slow start to their 2026-27 campaign as they have lost all three games so far. After a disappointing loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night, the Warriors suffered a 131-122 overtime loss to the Phoenix Suns at the Mortgage Matchup Center on Saturday night.
Considering it was a second night of a back-to-back, Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and the senior members of the roster were given a rest. Hence, Lendeborg was the main star for the Dubs on Saturday.
While he did impress with 26 points, nine rebounds and five assists, head coach Steve Kerr made it clear that the rookie still has significant work to do defensively.
He’s fearless. He’s huge, and he’s got a great skill set. He can dribble, pass, and shoot. The defensive side is where I want to see the most improvement. His weak-side awareness right now is very poor. With his size, he should be one of our best defenders at the rim.

Lendeborg has shown some promising in his first three games. Through his first three games, Lendeborg is averaging 18.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists. He will learn as the season goes on and will be a contender for the Rookie of the Year award next year.
