When LeBron James left the Los Angeles Lakers, many quickly dismissed the franchise’s future, with the offensive-minded Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves leading the charge.
The biggest question mark was whether the duo could defend and come up clutch when the going gets tough. They have produced in the past whenever a game was on the line, but Reaves’ postseason effort so far has been disappointing.
Doncic, though, has been exceptional in the 2024 run to the NBA Finals. However, the very reason the Dallas Mavericks booted him next season was because of his lack of defensive effort and conditioning.
While the Slovenian is working hard to be effective helping his team defensively, he has absolutely taken the body-shaming to heart and showed up to this year’s Lakers’ training camp in the best possible shape.
With that fitness comes the possibility of being more dominant on the scoring side. When facing the Utah Jazz, that is what he leaned into. While some might dismiss this game and this performance as something against a minnow team, it is still not easy to put up 52 points that easily.
Shooting 56.7% from the field and converting eight of his 18 attempts from beyond the three-point line, and 90.9% from the free-throw line, Luka Doncic was lethal across the board.
LUKA JUST ERUPTED FOR 52 POINTS 🚨 🪄 52 PTS 🪄 8 REB 🪄 10 AST 🪄 2 STL 🪄 8 3PM 🪄 LAKERS ROAD WIN He becomes the first player in @Lakers franchise history to record 50+ PTS, 10+ AST, 5+ REB, and 5+ 3PM in a single game! https://t.co/mfUAJSEJYB

Along with his scoring, he also helped his teammates score 10 times, while also grabbing eight rebounds. If anything, these numbers will surely help his desire to finally win the regular-season MVP award.
Luka Doncic surpasses a few records in the process
While this 52-point outing might not be Luka Doncic’s best offensive performance of his career, he did manage to etch his name in the history books in quite a few categories.
He became the first player in Lakers history to record a single-game stat line of 50+ points, 10+ assists, five+ rebounds, and five+ three-pointers made. The 27-year-old also became the fastest point guard in league history to record 10 50-point games. With that, he passed Kevin Durant on the list.

Wearing the purple and gold, Doncic has now surpassed 3000 regular-season points. With that number coming in just 95 games, the superstar became the fastest in franchise history, breaking the great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record set in 109 games.
This level of offensive production also helped the Los Angeles Lakers record their third straight game scoring 125 points or more, a franchise first.
Luka’s Lakers! The Lakers score 125 points in the first 3 games of a season for the first time in franchise history! Luka Doncic joins Elgin Baylor (2x) and Jerry West as the only Lakers players with 50 points and 10 assists in a game! 🔥 https://t.co/Wp9LjvGLRp

Luka Doncic also joins legendary Lakers Elgin Baylor and Jerry West as the only players with 50 points and 10 assists. He is leading this historic offense, which could become the team’s new identity going forward.
Luka Doncic shows his commitment on both ends of the floor
While those numbers might make Lakers fans happy, the naysayers will point to how Luka Doncic’s offense was never the problem. Rather, it is his inability to stay focused both while arguing with officials and in his lack of effort on defense that tends to affect his team.

The complaining seems to be at a minimum for now, as he has only engaged with opposing players so far. But his effort on defense is still a question mark.
However, on one play, the guard first fights with Jazz sophomore Ace Bailey to snatch the ball away. Then, as he tries to set Bailey up on the opposite half of the floor to gain some separation, both the Jazz star and Doncic lose their footing.

But the latter manages to compose himself better than his opponent, notices the space available, and drains a long-range three-pointer that became the exclamation point before halftime. If this level of effort continues, expect the Lakers to vault into championship contention.
