The Daniel Jones experiment is starting to look like a failure. However, the Indianapolis Colts’ head coach Shane Steichen still has unwavering faith in Jones.

Indy began as underdogs against the unbeaten Vikings in Minnesota. But the Colts camp still had optimism about securing a win because the Vikings offense scored the fewest points of all the unbeaten teams in the league.

Moreover, the Colts looked to use Jones’ knowledge of Kevin O’Connell’s system as he briefly held a clipboard beside him in 2024. It didn’t work out. Brian Flores’ Vikings defense limited the Colts to just one rushing touchdown and ten points.

Daniel Jones completed 13 of 22 passes for 108 yards and threw one interception. CBS Sports announcers Ian Eagle and Ross Tucker sounded confused by Jones’ play.

The Vikings won 16-10 in the end. The Colts are now 2-5. Despite the disappointing record, Shane Steichen dismissed the idea of benching Jones and starting Anthony Richardson.

Because I got a ton of faith in Daniel [Jones]. The game plane today was to go in and run the football. Obviously, at the end he had the interception and that happens in football.

Steichen said after the game

Colts fans call out Shane Steichen for refusing to bench Daniel Jones for Anthony Richardson

Steichen’s unwillingness to turn to AR in a crisis is understandable. The former first-round draft pick hasn’t lived up to expectations.

Injuries and inconsistent game time has hampered his development, but the former Florida star struggled to adapt to the NFL’s speed, leading the Colts to sign Jones, who was cut by the Giants for the same reason.

Moreover, AR has had disciplinary issues. Prior to the game in Minnesota, he was busted for possessing Marijuana. The Colts came close to parting ways with him earlier in the year, but kept him as Jones’ immediate backup.
Richardson is 8-5 as a starter. Jones went 8-5 in his debut Colts campaign before picking up a season-ending Achilles injury. Indy finished 8-9 and missed the playoffs. Jones signed an extension and is 2-5 in year two. The Colts are 2-12 in the last fourteen.

The situation is so dire that Colts fans want Richardson to start next week. However, Steichen isn’t willing to make a chance at quarterback.

Fortunately for the Colts and the league, there’s only one Brian Flores around. His Vikings blitzed Jones on 85% of his dropbacks during Sunday's loss, the highest rate by any NFL team in the past 20 seasons, according to ESPN's Kevin Seifert. Jones admitted that Indy anticipated such a grind.

"We expected it to be this kind of game. Kind of an ugly game,” Daniel Jone said after the game via WISH TV News.

In seven games, Jones has thrown 143 completions (59.6%), 1398 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. He has 5 fumbles and 3 losses.
