Chiefs Work the Phones for a Wide Receiver After Patrick Mahomes Goes Two Games Without a TD Pass

With the trade deadline approaching fast, the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to add an elite receiver to pair with quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Patrick Mahomes began the season in scintillating form. He threw at least two touchdowns in four straight games. The Kansas City Chiefs won all of them.

In Week 5, he leaned on running back Kenneth Walker to do the heavy lifting. Walker scored two touchdowns, and the Chiefs’ defense limited the Chargers to just six points to secure a fifth win.

Last week, Mahomes faced his biggest test so far. KC traveled to the den of the defending champions, the Seattle Seahawks, who boast the NFL’s best defense.

Mahomes completed 57.6% of his passes for 165 yards and threw an interception. KC scored just three total points (second-lowest total in the Mahomes era). The Chiefs suffered their first defeat.

However, Mahomes isn’t the root cause of the stalled Chiefs offense. The Chiefs don’t have a true deep threat or a clear-cut WR1 on the team. After Tyquan Thornton‘s season-ending injury, the Chiefs have tried different players to fill his role, but to no avail.

Rashee Rice may be the main guy, but he hasn’t played since the Raiders game. Xavier Worthy has struggled to find his identity on the team. Andy Reid has tried Worthy in several different ways, but he still lacks the physicality or experience to be a top number one. Mahomes said after the Seattle game:

If you look at how Seattle played us… If we can get that run game going a little more, that downfield passing game a little more… Then, I’ve got to give guys chances… I need to throw the ball with more air on it to let guys make plays.

The only way for the Chiefs to improve their downfield game is to trade for an out-and-out WR1.

Kansas City Chiefs are linked to Garrett Wilson

Several young receivers on bad teams could be available for the Chiefs to pick up. Among them, Brian Thomas Jr. (Jaguars), Josh Downs (Colts), and DeVonta Smith (Eagles) are strongly linked to the Chiefs.

Prime Video insider James Palmer said this week:

The Kansas City Chiefs, to my understanding, have been working the phones for weeks here trying to get a wide receiver for Patrick Mahomes.

BTJ is a good receiver, but he has a bad habit of dropping too many catches. Downs is undersized and has never been a WR1. Smith being an Eagle is out of the question. Philly traded AJ Brown to New England earlier this year; it’s unlikely they would part ways with another top receiver so soon.

Garrett Wilson is another name linked to the Chiefs. Wilson signed an extension last year and won’t come cheap. But the former Ohio State star could be the missing piece in the Chiefs’ offense. He has three 1000-yard seasons on his CV despite receiving from four different quarterbacks. With the Jets heading for another losing season, the Chiefs should trade for him to save their season.

The Chiefs may have to part ways with at least one first-round draft pick to bring Wilson to KC. However, Wilson has stated that he wants to stay in the Big Apple and fight for wins.

The deadline ends on November 10. Brett Veach must act fast to improve the Chiefs’ offense. He has already smashed a homer by signing Walker—adding Wilson could propel the Chiefs to another Super Bowl run.
