Mercedes has reigned at the top of the charts in Formula One’s Turbo Hybrid era. But with the advent of the 2022 regulatioms of FIA, there has been several changes to the make of the F1 race cars. And unfortunately, Mercedes has not been able to construct a car that is as good as the ones they had delivered in the previous seasons of F1.

As of now, they are still trying to crack the problems of Porpoising that have caused both the Mercedes drivers to score too low for the team to aim for the Championships this year. But in a recent interview, Mercedes Boss Toto Wolff said all hope is not lost for the Brackley-based team as they can still win races this year.

Toto Wolff has been an integral part of Mercedes and has seen the team win the Constructors’ Championship consecutively for eight record-breaking years. But now, he admits that their car is not the usual top-of-the-line Mercedes marvel that the fans had hoped for.

The Silver Arrows have had an undoubtedly poor start to the 2022 season but they can make a comeback if they can fix the problems with the car and strategize perfectly.

The Austrian gave an interview to the media after a dismal Mercedes performance at the Free Practice sessions in Melbourne for the 2022 Australian Grand Prix. Even though both the Mercedeses were over one second per lap slower than their opponents, Wolff reckons they can get some race wins this year.

The first two races of the year in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia saw Mercedes race in the fifth and sixth positions and sometimes even lower down the line. While Hamilton did get a podium finish in Bahrain, his car was still noticeably slower than the Ferraris and even the Red Bulls. And as the Scuderia drivers have put up a surprisingly good performance in the first two races of this year, Mercedes has not just Red Bull to fight against for the Championship trophy, but Ferrari as well.

While the fans might expect there to be uncertainty and fear at the Brackley factories due to Mercedes’ poor start, Toto Wolff showed immense confidence in his drivers’ abilities and the potential of Mercedes’ 2022 car.

He said, “We’re getting closer step by step, but the others aren’t asleep. And they already understood this problem in February,” while giving an interview to the Austrian news outlet Krone. He also said, “I’m assuming that we’ll still be able to win this year but that doesn’t happen by itself, you have to fight for it.”

Now, it remains to be seen if Lewis Hamilton and George Russell can do some wonders with their Mercedes cars during the race in Melbourne or if more disappointment awaits the Mercedes fans.
