“They are extremely heavy,” Max Verstappen ‘not pleased’ with these next generation F1 cars

Max Verstappen is leading the 2022 F1 World Championship but has indicated that he is not very happy with the extra weight that the cars have put on this year and further believes that he can’t see a solution coming anytime soon.

In recent years F1 cars have become heavier and the upward trajectory in weight has carried on this year as well. The 2022 regulations have led to an increase of 46 Kg in the weight of cars and it has largely been because of the safety improvements that have come into the sport.

The 2022 cars have a minimum weight set of 798 Kg without fuel and when 110Kg of fuel gets added to it, the cars whey around 900 Kg when they line up on the grid.

Things have changed massively in the sport compared to the liveries of 2013 and the extra weight that the cars have put on this year has not sat well with the F1 drivers.

In particular, Max Verstappen has raised his voice over the problem but has also accepted that following other cars have become more manageable this year.

While talking about it Verstappen said, “I think following has been quite a bit better, so that’s positive.”

But of course, the weight of the cars, they’re extremely heavy, which I think is not great, which I don’t really see a quick solution for.”

But overall, the following and stuff has been a bit better. It’s difficult to expect how much better it would be but for me at least you have a better chance of racing.”

But then again, on some tracks, it’s still very hard to follow but that’s also in combination with tires overheating and stuff, so there are a few things to look at.”

Max Verstappen is not the only driver who is not happy with the weight of the cars as Lance Stroll also wishes for future cars to be a bit lighter.

Lance while putting his stance forward said, “I think the weight of the cars has just become too heavy and I would like to see that be improved going forward in the coming years.”

There are many things for sure that we can change and do better but off the top of my head that’s something that I think would be nice to improve to make the cars a little bit more enjoyable and nimble to drive.”

George Russell has also concurred with his fellow race drivers but has indicated that it will be difficult to reduce the weight as it has come because of the safety measures.

Russell while discussing the issue said, “As Lance and Max said, lighter cars would be great, but you can’t have everything in the world.”

The reason we’re heavier is because of safety, so yeah, I don’t know. I really can’t pick one, because there are too many compromises.”

George Russell has stated a very valid point, as in F1, drivers can’t have their way all the time as there are many things that the F1 hierarchy has to consider before laying out regulations and considering how unpredictable the sport has become in recent years, it won’t come as a huge surprise if there is no reduction in weight in the upcoming years of the sport.

F1 is always going to remain a dangerous sport so there is no doubt that the safety of the drivers is always going to be the top priority and if it leads to a weight increase so be it because nothing is more precious than the life of a driver.
