‘Has George been making PPTs again?’ F1 Twitter divided over news of Daniel Ricciardo potentially replacing Lewis Hamilton

Daniel Ricciardo is currently without a seat in F1 for 2023, having been replaced by compatriot Oscar Piastri for 2023. There are a few potential destinations, such as Alpine and Haas, but there is also the possibility of a sabbatical next year. Nothing has been set in stone yet. However, recently, some rumours have emerged of him going to Mercedes to as a reserve driver.

But there is one more rumour, which is slightly more outlandish. There have been some reports that Mercedes is looking at Daniel Ricciardo as a long-term Lewis Hamilton replacement. For his part, the Briton has completely ruled out both rumours. When asked if he would welcome Ricciardo as a reserve driver, Hamilton said: “I think he should be racing. He’s earned the right to be amongst us all racing…If I was managing him, he would be racing!”

As for the rumour about Ricciardo replacing him, Hamilton said in a press conference: “I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.” and then looked across to Daniel Ricciardo and said: “Sorry, buddy!” But as for the fans, the reactions have been rather polarized, to say the least.

Daniel Ricciardo has certainly not been at his best at McLaren. Aside from the famous Monza win last year, there haven’t been a lot of happy times for the Australian. He’s struggled with adapting to the car and as such, he has struggled to match his teammate Lando Norris. This is reflected in the points table, where Norris is 63 points ahead.

As such, some fans are rather sceptical of the move, but some do believe that he can perform if given the chance. As per the Daily Mail, the play seems to be to acquire Ricciardo as a reserve driver, and then when Hamilton retires, promote him to the big seat. From there, it would make sense for George Russell to assume the role of the number one driver. One fan agrees with this.

There has been quite a lot of discourse surrounding this potential move. As seen in this example, one person believes the news is a ‘load of rubbish’ while the other person defends Ricciardo, saying that he still has talent.

Some just believe that there is no way this news is true.

Even some Ricciardo fans believe (or know) that this might be a bit of a stretch.

Some think that George Russell has a hand in this (potential) move.

Whatever may be the case, Formula 1 fans would surely love to see the Honey Badger remain in Formula 1, with whatever team that might be. Unfortunately, however, there is not yet any confirmation of his future, and fans are anxiously waiting to see what will end up happening.
