The peculiar MMA bout that was staged within a car

MMA is borne out of martial arts, which embody the utmost respect for not only the opponent but also the very craft itself. While major MMA promotions like the UFC and Bellator try the utmost hardest to uphold this ideal, the same cannot be said of regional promotions.

While it was a woman fighting a teenager and his grandfather last time, this time a video has emerged of another eccentric bout that has been organized by a local Russian MMA organization. On this occasion, two men can be seen fighting in a car. Dana White and Herb Dean must be having a field day looking at this!

The details of how the match-up went are actually quite interesting. To add a somewhat more organic feel to the setting of the bout and also increase the difficulty, the fighters started first by unbuckling their seats, before going ham on each other.

The two men regularly shuffled their positions – at one moment, one of the fighters stood in the car beating his opponent who was crouched on the seat, while at another, both men started pummeling each other standing.

The fight had to be stopped eventually given the fighter being pummeled managed to catch his opponent’s legs, throwing a takedown on him, with both of the fighters landing outside of the car.

The big organizations of MMA, including the UFC, Bellator and Pride work especially hard to enforce a single code of conduct that has be to adhered by all fighters, teams, referees, judges and even the organization itself.

This set of rules is defined as the unified rules of MMA, which is followed by every organization that wants to be seen in a favourable light. As per the UFC website, “THE UNIFIED RULES OF MMA GOVERN Judging criteria, Fouls, Prohibited substances, Number of rounds per bout and round duration, Weight classes, Medical requirements and Athlete attire and equipment.

Clearly, this is a simplification of an exhaustible list. However, the bouts like the one talked about above not only do not pay heed to any of these rules, but they also showcase the world of MMA in a bad light.

The biggest promotions’ brass, which includes the likes of Dana White, Scott Coker and Hunter Campbell, has worked extremely hard to pull the sport out of the notion of being a gladiatorial sport, which is only competed in, and watched by brutes.

Recently, another bizarre bout made the news wherein the local MMA organization paired up a transgender woman with a man – the video was blasted by fans and experts all over, including Israel Adesanya, who said, “Why we allowing this?”

Evidently, for the sport to gain traction as a mainstream sport that is enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds, such bouts, which are set up for the sole purpose of bringing eyeballs interested in watching something bizarre; must stop.
