The championship is contested by senior men’s national teams. 32 different nations are divided into groups of 8 on the basis of international rankings and a pot selection process. All 32 teams will play one game against each team from their group. Two teams from each group will qualify for the knockout stages.

FIFA World Cup 2022 schedule
The prestigious tournament is taking place in the country of Qatar. The opening ceremony takes place on the 20th of November. Qatar will host the final at the Lusail stadium on the 18th of December, 2022.
The one-month-long competition will be played in eight different stadiums across the country. The first and only match on the opening day will be played between the host team Qatar and Ecuador from Group A. England vs Iran is going to be the second match of the competition the following day as the USA and Netherlands go head-to-head on day 2.

- Group stage: Nov. 20-Dec. 2
- Round of 16: Dec. 3-6
- Quarterfinals: Dec. 9-10
- Semifinals: Dec. 13-14
- Third-place match: Dec. 17
- Final: Dec. 18
