Mateu Lahoz and Lionel Messi
Mateu Lahoz, the Valencian referee, has concluded his involvement in the World Cup in Qatar, according to Tiempo de Juego on Sunday. His role in the tournament came to an end after officiating the quarterfinal match between the Netherlands and Argentina. Mateu is heading back to Spain, but the other members of our referee team, including Hernández Hernández, Martínez Munuera, and De Burgos Bengoetxea, have the chance to officiate as VAR referees in another game.
Mateu Lahoz was the focus last Friday in the game between the Netherlands and Argentina since neither side was pleased with his decisions. Players such as Lionel Messi and Dibu Martinez expressed their disapproval that a referee of his caliber was appointed to officiate a match of such significance.
Mateu Lahoz officiated the Qatar-Senegal and Iran-United States matches in the group stage, and will be remembered for breaking the record for cards issued in the Qatar 2022 Netherlands-Argentina quarterfinal. This will be his last World Cup, after having been present at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. However, Lahoz might still have a chance to be part of the 2024 Euro Cup in Germany.

Lionel Messi‘s dream of capturing the FIFA World Cup trophy remained alive as Argentina overcame Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shootout. After Denzel Dumfries leveled the score 2-2 in extra time, it was up to Lautaro Martinez to decide the winner with a decisive penalty kick, sending the Argentines through to the semi-finals.
The quarter-final showdown between Argentina and Netherlands featured a captivating display of tactics, however, the highlight of the match was unquestionably the Spanish referee Mateu Lahoz. His performance was remarkable, as he handed out a total of 15 cautionary yellow cards.
Messi, who has had a complicated past with Lahoz, was not timid to speak out after the game and declared: “I don’t want to talk about the referee because you can’t be honest. If you talk they sanction you, FIFA must think about it, they can’t put a referee like that for these instances, they can’t put a referee who isn’t up to the task.”
