The New York Yankees will be without Aaron Judge for a while. On Thursday, the outfielder was diagnosed with a rib fracture and will be out for approximately 4 to 6 weeks before being re-imagined on what the next steps would be.

Judge had been experiencing some discomfort in the past few weeks. The Yankees’ medical team diagnosed him with a bone bruise in the right rib cage. A specialist doctor in New York would confirm this initial diagnosis.

However, the team wanted some more clarity on him. The reigning American League MVP thus underwent an MRI scan.

The results revealed that Judge had a fracture in his first rib on the right side and will require a period of rest. While this is a huge blow for the team, they do expect him to return at some point later this year.

According to manager Aaron Boone, the 34-year-old was having trouble while swinging the bat. He did struggle from the plate in May and even went on a 0-for-15 skid.

He broke this barren run with a home run against the Tampa Bay Rays. This also snapped an 11-game home run drought for him. Eventually, he wrapped up the month of May while going 14-for-68 with 1 home run, 8 RBIs, and 19 strikeouts.

This is not the first time that Judge has suffered an issue with his right rib cage. In September 2019, he fractured his right first rib and had a partial lung collapse while attempting to make a diving catch.

Judge is the star player of the team. When he performs well, the team plays well. When he has a slump, the Yankees’ offense also goes quiet.

The injury to him means that the team will be without its leader for a while. Fans on X were obviously unhappy with this. One user wrote, “there goes the season,” while making their feelings known.

Check out that and some more reactions below:

In the first series in his absence, the Yankees almost got swept. They lost the first 2 games against the Cleveland Guardians before winning 2-1 on Thursday and getting back in the win column. With him now being out for a while, the other stars on the team will have to step up.

MLB insider believes Yankees will be alright without Aaron Judge in the short term

Before his diagnosis results came out, there were some worries that he could be out with the Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. This would have forced him to undergo surgery and would have seen him miss the remainder of the season.

At the moment, this is not the case. The Yankees expect him to return at some time later this season. While speaking with Scott Van Pelt, MLB insider Jeff Passan expressed that the team does have some internal options they can look at in Judge’s absence.

The Yankees, you have to understand, Scott, are a team built around pitching. And so I think they’re going to be alright in the short term. And in the long term, they’re just glad that this was not something worse.

Jeff Passan said regarding Aaron Judge and Yankees

As per Passan, the Yankees could turn towards Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones. They could even have Amed Rosario take up that spot.

For now, the Yankees remain 0.5 games behind the Rays in the AL East Standings with a 37-25 record. This weekend, they will take on their arch-rivals, the Boston Red Sox, in a 3-game series before facing the Guardians once again.
