UFC 260: Alexander Volkanovski vs Brian Ortega canceled due to COVID protocols

The Featherweight title defense of Alexander Volkanovski against Brian Ortega will no longer serve as the co-main event at UFC 260. Just before a week, this fight has scheduled the news came in that this fight is postponed due to COVID protocols.

This issue according to the report came from Volkanovski’s side, prior to this the co-main event of UFC Vegas 22 between his teammate Brad Riddell and Gregor Gillespie also pulled due to covid protocols just before one day from the fight.

Volkanovski was riding a 9 fight win streak entering into this fight with two consecutive wins against the former champion Max Holloway. This is going to be his second title defense after winning the title.

Ortega returned inside the octagon after being away for almost 22 months in the fight against ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung. Over the course of five rounds, Brian Ortega dominated Chan Sung Jung and won the fight via unanimous decision.

With this win he sealed the number one spot of the challenger for the title. The promotion hasn’t announced any new date for this fight but fans will eagerly wait for this one to be rebooked.

The champion Alexander Volkanovski in his latest tweet addressed that this fight has been canceled after he has tested positive for COVID. Volkanovski says,

“So devastated to share that I’ve tested positive for COVID-19 and my fight is off and will be rescheduled. I tested negative leaving Australia, negative before entering the UFC bubble but my latest test was positive.”

“We have worked so hard getting ready for this fight and I’m absolutely gutted this has happened. We followed every policy and process to remain covid free but it wasn’t mean to be this same. Thanks to everyone here in the states for your support since arriving and to everyone back at home and around the world for your positive messages.”

“To my fans, I’m certain I’ll be bouncing back stronger than ever before.”
