- Alexander Zverev suffered a 6-1, 6-2 defeat to Jannik Sinner in the Madrid Open final, marking his ninth consecutive loss to Sinner.
- Fans criticized Zverev for claiming he is on the same level as Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic, labeling his comments as "delusional."
- Jannik Sinner made history by winning the first four Masters 1000 titles of the season and is aiming for a Career Golden Masters if he wins the Italian Open.
Alexander Zverev once again found himself on the receiving end of a quick defeat at the hands of Jannik Sinner. In what was also his ninth consecutive defeat to the Italian ace, Zverev suffered a 6-1, 6-2 loss in the Madrid Open final, and now he trails 4-10 in the head-to-head matchups.
It was Sascha’s first final of the season, and he was chasing his first title since his Munich Open triumph last year. The win made Sinner the first man in history to win the first four Masters 1000 of the season, as well as the first man to win five consecutive titles at this level.
I think he’s very stable. He doesn’t have dips, he doesn’t have phases where he goes down. I think that’s why he’s world No. 1. To me, that’s more spectacular, I think, keeping the level the whole time.
Alexander Zverev said at the press conference
Alcaraz, who at present is nursing his wrist injury, has already played three finals this year, winning titles in Melbourne by defeating Novak Djokovic and in Doha against Arthur Fils.
I think there’s a big gap between Sinner and everybody else right now. It’s quite simple. I think there’s a big gap between Sinner and everybody else. And I think there’s a big gap between Alcaraz, myself, maybe Novak, and everybody else. I think there are two gaps right now. It’s difficult to say that there’s not a gap between Sinner and everybody else if he hasn’t lost a match in Masters events since Shanghai.
Alexander Zverev added
Sinner has become the first man in history to win the first four Masters 1000s of the season. He will be completing the Career Golden Masters if he wins the Italian Open and will become the second man, after Djokovic, to do so.
Fans don’t agree with Alexander Zverev’s opinion that he’s playing at the same level as Alcaraz, Sinner, and Djokovic
Alexander Zverev saying he is playing at the same level as Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and Carlos Alcaraz did not sit well with the fans. He was called “delusional” for putting himself in the same bracket as the three Grand Slam champions.

Zverev will next be playing at the Italian Open, where he is a two-time champion. The last time Zverev won a Masters 1000 title was in Paris back in 2024.
Greg Rusedski believes Jannik Sinner will be hungrier for titles in Carlos Alcaraz’s absence
Alcaraz will be skipping both the Italian Open and the French Open because of a wrist injury. In his absence, Sinner will be hungrier for his first win in both events, believes former ATP player Greg Rusedski.

I don’t think it would be bad because it’s history-making. If he wins everything on the board, he’s won all nine Masters series. Imagine he has all nine master series and all four majors at such a young age. With Carlos being out, that’s gonna give him more hunger to push for titles, but he’s gotta find the balance and deal with the pressure.
Sinner finished as the runner-up in Rome and Paris last year, losing both to the seven-time Grand Slam champion. While Alcaraz will be missing the chance to bid for a hat-trick at Roland Garros, Sinner will be aiming to complete the Career Grand Slam.
Sinner, now a three-time champion on clay, dethroned Alcaraz from the No.1 rankings after beating him in the Monte Carlo final. He gained 4,000 ranking points after his wins in the Sunshine Double events, Monte Carlo, and Madrid.
