Amit Kumar Wins Silver in Men’s 10,000m Race Walk at World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi

The World Athletics U20 Championships are currently being held in Nairobi, where young athletes all over the world come together to fight it out for the best after the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics. India’s athletes are having a strong showing at the Championships, with the mixed 4x400m relay team clinching bronze on the opening day.
The men’s 10,000m race walk finals was all set to begin on the fourth day of the World Athletics U20 Championships. India’s Amit Kumar clinched the silver medal in the event after an exceptional performance.
Haristone Wanyonyi of Kenya took home gold after finishing with a time of 42:10.84s . While Amit was leading for the whole way throughout the race, he diverted his focus with only 2 laps to go. This allowed the Kenyan to sneak past Amit, and eventually he could not catch up with Wanyonyi.
Still Amit clinched the silver medal after strong performance, finishing with a time of 42:17.94s. Paul McGrath took home bronze in 42:31.11s.

“As it’s (Nairobi almost 2000 metres) a high altitude so breathing problem for me. It was my first international competition and I won silver for India. I’m happy that at least I could fulfill the hopes of India,” said Amit after the performance according to Indian Express.
The women’s 10,000m race walk finals was next, and India’s Baljeet Kaur took the early lead in the race. However it soon dissipated as the chasing pack overtook her. She finished with a time of 48:58.17s in 7th place, a personal best for her.
Eventually Mecixo’s Sofia Ramos Rodriguez took home the gold medal after an exceptional walk with a time of 46:23.01s almost a minute ahead of the field. Maele Bire-Heslouis of France took home the silver medal with a time of 47:43.6s, while Eliska Martinkova of Czech Republic took home the bronze medal.
