That strength, that mindset, and that way of getting back up time and time again are what make you unique. You are the best example for our children and an inspiration to millions of people. I admire you more than words can express, and I feel immensely proud to walk this life by your side. I love you so much.

Lionel Messi competed in probably his final match for Argentina and also shared a statement on Instagram on Monday, reflecting on his side’s defeat and thanking the team’s supporters.

The pain is immense, and it will take time for this wound to heal. But I also choose to hold on to all the good things … the matches we played, giving everything we had, will stay in our memories forever. With the support of an entire country, together with the hard work and effort of this group, we once again managed to be among the best teams in the world. Today it’s difficult to fully appreciate what we achieved, but this team reached two consecutive World Cup finals. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for every greeting and every message. Once again, we came together as a country, united by immense pride of being Argentine. I also want to congratulate Spain on winning the championship.

Argentina fell to Spain in the final after the European side secured a 1-0 victory. Messi was later seen fighting back tears after receiving his second-place medal.

The final could be Messi’s last appearance at a World Cup. Argentina will co-host the 2030 tournament, but Messi will be 43 at the time. However, Argentina’s run to the 2026 final marked its second consecutive appearance in a World Cup final, with the side winning it all back in 2022.
