Helwani is on the verge of cutting ties with the former YouTuber
The folly of Jake Paul and fighter pay has finally been shattered, by Ariel Helwani nonetheless. Yes, the YouTuber turned boxer has always been a suspicious guest in the world of combat sports despite his massive efforts to make fighter pay and the mistreatment of UFC fighters a mainstream topic.
This suspicion arose from Jake’s prior nature of having no real convictions and instead chasing whatever gains him the most clicks that he can then translate to money. A person like this fighting for a noble cause could never be taken at face value unless you were Ariel Helwani.
Helwani is not naive in any way but decided to give Paul the benefit of the doubt and welcomed him with open arms to the combat space. He even hosted press conferences and other promotional material for Jake’s fights as he shared the common belief that fighter exploitation was inherently wrong.
However Paul’s tweets during UFC 278 have had a huge effect on Helwani to the point where he may completely sever ties with Paul. The tweets in question were ones criticizing the co-main event between Luke Rockhold and Paulo Costa.

Ariel took offense to this as Rockhold was on the last lap of his career and throughout fight-week was campaigning for the same cause as Jake, though he had first-hand experience of dealing with the company. The tweet by Paul in specific dismissed Luke’s legacy as a pioneer of the sport, which Helwani having been a long-time reporter in the field could not agree at all with.
“Shame on you, for picking on the guy who was saying the same stuff that you were saying for the past year and a half, only difference is, he meant it, he felt it, he experienced it”, said Helwani as he lambasted Paul for dismissing someone who knows what it’s like to be under the thumb of a corporation.
“Everything you’ve said for the past year and a half, in my opinion, discredited after what you did on Saturday”, said a furious Helwani as he explained how he often had to fight his own colleagues to prove that Paul was sincere about the things he campaigns for and hoe all that had been for nothing
Ariel ended the message by reminding Jake that if he needed his campaign to improve fighter pay and find endearment in the MMA community among fans and fighters as a whole, “It’s the Luke Rockholds you need by your side”4
