In Short
  • Aryna Sabalenka lost to Hailey Baptiste in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open, ending her 15-match winning streak.
  • The defeat jeopardizes Sabalenka's position as World No.1, reducing her lead over Elena Rybakina to just 1,555 points.
  • Baptiste's victory marks the biggest win of her career and propels her into the top 25 of the WTA rankings.

Aryna Sabalenka was on the receiving end of a brutal defeat at the hands of World No.32 Hailey Baptiste in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open. The defeat was Sabalenka’s first loss after 15 consecutive wins on tour and ended her hopes of defending the WTA 1000 championship at the Spanish capital.

Sabalenka, three-time champion, entered the Madrid Open with a vast lead as World No.1 but was still defending 1000 points from her prior triumph last year. After the Sunshine Double, the Belarusian star was in red-hot form and was the favorite to win the Madrid Open over her rivals Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina.

After Rybakina, Gauff, and Swiatek crashed out of the tournament, Sabalenka and Mirra Andreeva were the only top 10 players remaining in the Madrid draw, which solidified the World No.1’s chances of winning the event. But reality set in for Sabalenka after the first set concluded against Baptiste.

Sabalenka had no trouble breezing past the American in the early stages of the match, but things suddenly turned uncomfortable for the 27-year-old. She was broken twice, leaving Baptiste to dominate the match and run away with a 4-0 lead. Sabalenka broke the World No.32, but Baptiste broke back to seal the second set.

The third set was more fierce than the second set ending. Sabalenka had broken Baptiste to go up 5-4, but the American star broke back to level the tie. Sabalenka led 4-1 in the tiebreak and was two points away from victory before Baptiste surged to claim the victory 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(6). Speaking after the match, Sabalenka was disappointed with the way she handled the third set of the tie:

It was a tough match. She played great, I played great. I think I had some opportunities in the third set, and I felt like I was maybe a little bit rushing the points there. But it’s okay—sometimes you have to learn. I’ll take the best from this week and move on. In Miami, I didn’t give her many opportunities—she couldn’t break my serve, I believe. But here, in the first game of the second set, I double-faulted twice out of nowhere, and I felt like that gave her belief.

Baptiste’s win over Sabalenka is the biggest victory of her career, and it was just their second meeting on tour. Their first head-to-head clash was at the Miami Open last month, where Sabalenka breezed past the 24-year-old 6-4, 6-4 in the quarter-finals. The American star is set to break into the top 25 of the WTA rankings.

Elena Rybakina closes points gap with Aryna Sabalenka in the WTA rankings after the Madrid Open disappointments

Aryna Sabalenka held more than 3,000 ranking points lead over World No.2 Elena Rybakina before the start of the clay season. In fact, the Belarusian star was expected to finish the season at the top of the WTA rankings without much pressure. But that has surprisingly tumbled over the past few weeks.

Rybakina won the Stuttgart Open, closing the gap to just 2,395 points after Sabalenka didn’t defend her 331 points at the same tournament. The Kazakhstan star entered the Madrid Open with 8,500 points, and by reaching the round of 15, she only improved her points by 55 points to 8,555 points.

Sabalenka, as the defending champion in Madrid, was to defend 1,000 ranking points. So, she entered the tournament with 9,895 points in the Live WTA rankings. The 27-year-old collected just 215 points by reaching the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 tournament, which has taken her points tally to 10,110 points.

Following Sabalenka’s loss to Hailey Baptiste in the quarter-finals, she holds just 1,555 points ahead of Rybakina in the Live WTA rankings. Sabalenka is yet to defend her quarter-finals finish at the Italian Open and runner-up at the French Open. Should she fail to defend any of them, her lead will reduce further before the grass-court season.
