Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Andrey Rublev: Preview
Stefanos Tsitsipas has had a mixed season so far. After a brilliant semifinal finish at the Australian Open, he had the best possible start to the clay season as he defended his Monte Carlo Masters title. But despite being one of the favorites, he bowed out in the fourth round of the French Open. He then won the Mallorca Open but lost to Nick Kyrgios in the third round of Wimbledon. He then also made it to the final of the Cincinnati Masters before crashing out of the first round of the US Open.
This week in Nur-Sultan, he is yet to drop a set and defeated the likes of Mikhail Kukushkin and Luca Nardi in the initial rounds. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets 7-6(8),6-3.
Andrey Rublev hasn’t had a good year according to his high standards. He started the year by reaching the third round of the Australian Open and then made it to the semifinals at Rotterdam and followed it up by winning back-to-back titles at Marseille and Dubai. He also made it to the semifinals of the Indian Wells Masters and also won the Serbia Open on clay where he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final. He also reached the quarterfinals of the French Open and after a poor run for the next two months, he made it to the semifinals of the Citi Open. He then reached the quarterfinals of the US Open.
Like Tsitsipas, Rublev too is yet to drop a set this week. He has beaten Laslo Djere and Zhang Zhizhen in the first two rounds before getting the better of Adrian Mannarino in straight sets 6-1,6-2 in the quarterfinals.
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Andrey Rublev: Prediction
There will be no clear favorite to win the match given how closely matched the two competitors are. Tsitsipas has done well this year and can be very lethal with those baseline strokes on the slow courts of Nur-Sultan. As for Rublev, his power-packed game will be tested and despite everything, he will have to step up his game, especially with the nature of the court. Expect a very tight match with Tsitsipas winning it by the barest of margins.
Prediction: Tsitsipas to win in three sets.
