At the World U-20 Athletics Championships, the Indian mixed 4×400 relay team broke an Asian junior record en route to qualifying for the final. The Indian team of Barath Sridhar, Priya Mohan, Kapil, and Rupal Chaudhary won heat number three on Monday with a time of 3 minutes and 19.62 seconds.

The Estadio Olmpico Pascual Guerrero in Cali, Colombia is hosting the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships, also known as the World Junior Championships, for athletes who qualify as juniors (born no earlier than 1 January 2003), from August 1 through August 6, 2022.

India placed second overall among the three heats, trailing only the USA, which won the second heat in a time that set a new championships record of 3:18.65s. In the most recent competition, which took place in Nairobi, Kenya in 2021 and saw the event’s debut, India took home the bronze medal in the mixed 4x400m relay. The lone newcomer to the team that included Sridhar, Priya, and Kapil and won bronze last year is Rupal.

The Indian quartet broke the Asian junior and clocked a record time and advanced to the 4x400m mixed relay final in the World Athletics Under-20 Championships at Cali, Colombia, on Monday despite arriving a day before the competition and after a 28-hour journey.

India broke its own Asian record of 3:20.60 set when winning the bronze at the 2017 World Championships in Nairobi by clocking an astounding 3:19.62s, the second-fastest time in the history of outdoor under-20 athletics. Following the three heats, India finished second overall to the United States (3:18.65s, a new championships record). The final of the same will be held at 03:20 am IST on Wednesday.

With a time of 3:22.41, the German team set a new U20 national record. The two quickest teams advanced to the medal round after finishing first and second in each of the three heats. In the heats, the USA team’s time was the fastest with a championship record of 3:18.65 seconds.

With a time of 3:19.74 seconds, a lifetime best, the Jamaican team came in second in the same heat. India left behind Germany and Great Britain to earn the first spot in heat 3.
