Commonwealth Games gold medallists Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy will have to wait for a little longer before deciding on joining the national badminton camp in Hyderabad. The pair has won gold in the mixed team event and a silver in the men’s doubles event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Shetty told Press Trust of India, “It is great to hear that the training camp has resumed but we will have to wait for a couple of weeks before we take a call on joining the camp.”
In 2017 Chirag paired with Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and clinched the title at the $20,000 Yonex Sunrise Vietnam International Challenge in Hanoi, Vietnam. They were the first Indian men’s doubles pair to win a Super 500 in Thailand. They also reached the finals of the Super 750 event at French Open last year. It helped them to break into the top 10.
Chirag Shetty’s Take On Training Under Current Conditions
“COVID cases are still increasing every day and our families are naturally a bit worried. Traveling during this time is not safe. Also, I am not sure about the quarantine rules of Hyderabad if we need to be in self-isolation for two weeks or more.” the 23-year-old said.
Shetty added, “There is also uncertainty about the international circuit with so many events being canceled. We don’t know if the calendar will start in October. Also, India is one of the most affected nations right now so even if the circuit resumes. Whether we will be given entry to the host countries, how many days of quarantine we have to go through, these are all important questions.”
