FC Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong denied rumors of earning an exorbitant salary amounting to about €37 million-per-year, at the club. The 27-year-old midfielder also brushed aside claims that he avoided having a surgery on his ankle, despite injury.
Frenkie de Jong sustained an injury in his right ankle during Barcelona’s La Liga encounter against Celta Vigo in September, last season. He made a comeback early this year, but had to return to the bench due to recurring injuries in the same ankle. This led to him remaining unavailable for the 2024 Euros, and it was rumored that he refused to have surgery on the injured ankle. He was also rumored to have been earning around €37 million annually, putting a significant burden on Barca’s finances.
Addressing those rumors, the Dutch midfielder first explained that both he and the club had mutually agreed upon using traditional healing methods and not opt for surgery, in order to cure his injury. He also highlighted the frustration and mental trauma in having to remain out for such a lengthy spell. While speaking on salary rumors, De Jong rubbished the claims and urged people to not share misinformation, while also adding that the rumored salary numbers are way off his existing earnings at the club.

FC Barcelona’s injury list grows with Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Frenkie de Jong and Fermin Lopez out for longer spells
Barcelona have a number of players out with injury this season, hindering their hopes of clinching the La Liga title. Despite this, the club has started the new season on a high note, winning seven out of their first eight La Liga matches, while also going on to scoring 25 goals.
Seven first team players are currently suffering injuries, including defenders Andreas Christensen and Ronald Araujo, midfielders Fermin Lopez, Frenkie De Jong and Gavi and star signing Dani Olmo. First-team goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen most recently suffered a season ending injury, with the club being forced to sign Wojciech Szczesny, out of retirement.
Hansi Flick’s side have however, been performing well this season. They most recently suffered their first defeat of their La Liga campaign against Osasuna, by a disastrous scoreline of 4-2.
