Every twelve months, Catalunya Radio presents the Kubala Trophy to the player who has scored the greatest goal from Catalonia over the previous year. Last year, the accolade was given to Espanyol’s Raul de Tomas for his spectacular strike against Almeria. This time, the award has gone to a new recipient – Pedri.

The Barcelona midfielder scored a fantastic goal against Galatasaray in the Europa League, deceiving three players before putting the ball in the net. In discussion with Catalunya Radio after being granted the award, Pedri was asked if he had sent a message of congratulations to Lionel Messi, his former Barcelona captain who won the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Even though his phone might explode at any moment, Pedri replied, “I still haven’t sent Messi a message to congratulate him. I’m sure he got many messages… I’ll send it to him in a few days so he can see it,”. The youngster wanted to ensure that his appreciation message reached the player he looked up to while growing up.

Before the World Cup began, Pedri expressed his desire to compete against Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, in the final. Unfortunately, Spain was eliminated by Morocco in Round 16, so Pedri’s wish went unfulfilled. Messi, however, went on to reach the final and was triumphant in a thrilling 3-3 match against France to win the championship.

According to regional news sources on Wednesday, Lionel Messi will commemorate his World Cup victory by committing to remain with Paris Saint-Germain. The 35-year-old, who led  Argentina to a World Cup final triumph against France in Qatar last weekend, will sign a one-year extension to his existing contract in Paris, which is set to end in the summer.

Le Parisian and RMC Sport reported that when Messi returns from his World Cup holiday, he will meet with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and other top club representatives. In 2021, Messi left Barcelona after two decades with the club to join Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year contract with the option for a third.

During his time in Spain, Messi won four Champions League titles and ten La Liga titles. He was instrumental in Argentina’s World Cup win over France after a dramatic 3-3 draw that went into extra time. Messi, who has been bestowed the title of the best player in the competition, netted two goals in the match against France, against his teammate from PSG, Kylian Mbappe, notching a remarkable three-goal performance.
