Bayer Leverkusen agree terms with Premier League club Aston Villa for the sale of winger Leon Bailey
Premier League club Aston Villa have announced to reach an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for the signing of Jamaican forward Leon Bailey, with the move subject to the player’s completion of medicals and agreeing of personal terms with Villa.
Bailey had been offered to a number Premier League clubs this summer following Leverkusen’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, and now the Birmingham club have officially secured his services.
Aston Villa confirm an agreement for Leon Bailey with club star Jack Grealish looking highly likely for a £100m move to Manchester City
Aston Villa announced the news of Bailey’s confirmation of agreement on Saturday in an official club statement reading; “Aston Villa and Bayer Leverkusen have reached an agreement for the transfer of Leon Bailey subject to the player completing a medical and finalising personal terms.”
The announcement of Bailey’s imminent arrival is majorly influenced by the fact that Aston Villa have received a massive bid from Manchester City of £100m for captain and star player Jack Grealish.
Villa had offered Grealish a new and improved contract earlier this summer to try and keep him at the club, despite him only signing a five-year deal last September, but now it is understood they are willing to allow their captain to leave, though the Claret and Blue are yet to formally respond to City’s offer.
Several of England’s top clubs including the big names of Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool were tracking the Jamaican international last summer, but were put off by the quite hefty £40m tag asked by Bayer.
But this time, with one crucial player looking likely to leave, Aston Villa didn’t waste much time to confirm the move for a much lesser fee. Bailey will be club’s third signing this season, all high profile, following in the footsteps of Emiliano Buendia and Ashley Young.
The 23-year-old Jamaican winger, was previously eligible to play for England due to two of his grandparents holding British passports, scored 15 goals and 11 assists last season for Leverkusen in all competitions. Bailey played four-plus seasons with the Bayer following his joining from Genk.
