Most of the pre-release buzz for Netflix’s second season of WWE Unreal centered on R-Truth’s contract drama, Seth Rollins’ fake knee injury, and Money in the Bank cash-in. But the season actually opens with a relatively straightforward story: Becky Lynch’s return to WWE at WrestleMania 41 in April 2025.

Lynch’s return as Lyra Valkyria’s surprise partner in a showdown with Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez for the Women’s Tag Team titles does bring significant news as ‘The Man’ plans to call it a career when her current contract expires.

The seven-time WWE Women’s champion revealed that she was burnt out before taking an almost-year-long break as her contract neared expiration in 2024, sharing candidly how that decision came about.

At 38, Lynch emphasized that her choice is rooted in perspective rather than physical decline, and spoke openly about the emotional toll of being away from her daughter, Roux, for long stretches while traveling on the road. The Irishwoman also admitted she wasn’t entirely joking when she hinted her last break might be permanent

I love working. I love getting out in front of the crowd. I love wrestling, but there’s also that hard part of, ‘Mom’s got to go to work.‘ That guilt is always hard. The time off, it was maybe gonna be forever. I don’t think I knew. I was kind of so content. This is probably it, this is the final run. This is the final contract. So I suppose it’s a matter of knowing that, understanding that, and enjoying that the best I can.

Since joining WWE in 2013, Lynch has built a Hall of Fame-worthy resume, holding the Women’s Championship seven times and headlining WrestleMania 35 in 2019. While the exact length of her contract for the April return isn’t public, it’s presumed to be at least three years.

That gives fans some time, but with John Cena, Hiroshi Tanahashi, and other big names like AJ Styles eyeing retirement in 2026, it increasingly feels like the end of an era in pro wrestling. Lynch most recently retained her Intercontinental title on Raw with a victory over Maxxine Dupri, underscoring that this final run isn’t a victory lap but a meaningful chapter in her legendary career.

Lyra Valkyria wasn’t thrilled with how her match against Becky Lynch unfolded at SummerSlam 2025. On WWE: Unreal Season 2, an episode recapped last year’s SummerSlam premium live event, during which Valkyria openly expressed her disappointment with the way her match against Lynch played out.

At the two-night event, Valkyria faced Lynch for the Women’s Intercontinental title in a No Disqualification, No Count-out, Last Chance match. The bout featured several noticeable botches, leaving both competitors frustrated backstage afterward.

Valkyria was visibly emotional, hurt by her performance, which also ran over 10 minutes, as noted by Gorilla Position. Despite Valkyria’s reaction, Lynch tried to downplay the situation.

She was very upset with herself, and she just started apologizing to me, and I was like, ‘It’s fine. It’s just wrestling.’ And then she was like, ‘No, it’s not fine. I need you to yell at me.’ And I was like, ‘No. I’m never going to be upset because a wrestling move or moves don’t go our way.’ She’s great. She cares.

Lynch added that mindset is exactly why Valkyria is so great and why she will continue to improve. She thrives on honesty, not on being handled with kid gloves. While that approach fuels her progress, it can also take a toll on her mental health, something Lynch fully understands.

In the same episode, Valkyria reflected on the aftermath of the match, revealing that even John Cena had tried to comfort her while she was weeping. She admitted that she had been feeling off even before the match began.
