Becky Lynch continues to find new and creative ways to connect with fans despite embracing a heel persona, making her one of the most entertaining parts of RAW right now. Along with delivering some of her best promos in recent months, the Women’s Intercontinental Champion has also earned praise for her backstage interactions with fellow superstars, many of which have been highlighted in documentaries such as WWE: Unreal.

At the same time, fans have often debated how projects like these challenge the traditional concept of kayfabe in professional wrestling, and Lynch appears to share similar thoughts on the subject.

Speaking during her podcast appearance with Chris Van Vliet, Lynch opened up about how kayfabe has changed over the years and why she believes it is essentially dead in modern wrestling. Although Lynch admitted that she dislikes seeing kayfabe fade away in today’s wrestling landscape, she also acknowledged that the evolution of media and fan access has made it impossible to prevent.

Becky Lynch blames journalists for being the sole reason behind ruining kayfabe

Continuing her thoughts on the current state of professional wrestling, Becky Lynch did not hold back while discussing the death of kayfabe in the modern era. She said, “The fact that we know what kayfabe is means it’s dead. Um, and we have a show about it being dead”.

Lynch went on to explain how fans’ growing curiosity about the wrestling business has contributed heavily to the situation, as audiences today are far more interested in learning about backstage operations and behind-the-scenes details than ever before.

She also pointed to wrestling journalists and online reports as a major reason why surprises are becoming increasingly difficult to protect. “It is dead because we have wrestling journalists that want to know the secrets and then tell the secrets before the secret happens, and people want to know, there is curiosity”, said the former WrestleMania main eventer.

Given the current landscape of wrestling media and social platforms, it has become incredibly challenging for both WWE management and performers to preserve surprises or maintain kayfabe consistently. A recent example fans often point to is Seth Rollins’ knee injury storyline, which eventually led to him capturing the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam 2025.

Speaking further about the challenge of maintaining kayfabe in modern wrestling, Becky Lynch explained that WWE now has to rely on unexpected twists, such as Seth Rollins faking an injury before ultimately winning the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam, in order to genuinely surprise fans.

Lynch described the storyline as one of the rare moments that successfully caught the audience off guard in an era where spoilers and backstage reports are everywhere. At the same time, she admitted that angles like these can have unintended emotional consequences backstage, especially for people who genuinely believe a performer is injured.

She revealed, “What a wonderful surprise, but then there were also people that were very upset with the surprise. They’re like, ‘We don’t wanna feel like someone is genuinely hurt. Like I remember talking to a wrestler backstage, and he was genuinely upset because he was concerned for his friend. He thought his friend was hurt.”

While the storyline received praise from both fans and critics for its execution, Lynch’s comments highlighted the difficult balance WWE faces when trying to preserve kayfabe in today’s wrestling landscape. Creating shocking moments often means blurring the line between fiction and reality, which can also affect the emotions of fellow wrestlers and close friends backstage.

Even as WWE continues to pull back the curtain through documentaries and behind-the-scenes projects, the company still faces the challenge of finding the right balance between transparency and protecting the magic of professional wrestling moving forward.
