The Englishman is likely to join Stamford Bridge in coming weeks with Chelsea on the verge of making their third summer signing.

Frank Lampard needs strengthening at the back and one area that troubled the most is the left-back position. Now, it seems the Blues will eliminate that problem, bringing in Ben Chilwell from Leicester. The 23 year old is long being linked with the club and will finally end the transfer saga surrounding him.

Fight for left-back spot between Palmieri and Alonso

As said earlier, Chelsea have a headache in deciding between Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso for the left-back position. Emerson from Italy is great going forward with the capability of aiming shots at goal but totally absent in his defensive work. His mate, Marcos Alonso fit in a three-man defense but is slow and pedestal in possession. Both of them have certain weakness that can’t be removed from their game.

Emerson had been caught napping while defending at the near post with forwards often beating his mark from set-pieces and crosses ,at least, to have a chance at goal. Even in attack he get caught in making decisions quickly. Alonso is dominant in a wing back role by holding possession and delivering crosses inside the box. He also does well defensively but lacks speed and that is the main downfall of him. The former is due to be sold at Inter Milan with the latter also heading the exit door. So, Chilwell is a desperation in the blue’s dressing room.

Chilwell in demand

Frank’s ambitious side made prosperous signing in the attack. The acquisition of star name in Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech is set to take Premier League by storm. But the team’s leaky defense is a source of concern. The left full-back position comes into question ,with other areas, to improve and upgrade before the transfer window ends in October. However, they don’t have to wait too long to get a deal in place as a long transfer hoodoo is about to end.

Good news for the interested side is that Chilwell valuation is dropped by Leicester from the initial £90 million fee. Brendan Rodgers side will have another important name leaving from defense after losing Harry Maguire to Manchester United, last summer. Express Sports reports that Chelsea want to sign him in a £50 million deal with the academy graduate set to earn £150,000 per week.

Chilwell is a hardworking and an attacking sense fullback, making him one of the best in the Premier League at the moment. However, his defensive numbers are also impressive. Something Chelsea urges him to do for them. Lampard had to use him in a four man backline for the wing back role is out of his game. In a more suited position, he brings the amount of energy and stability required both in attack and defense. He is also proactive with a real combination in his play. Chilwell also has a great understanding that helps him to cover up his weakness in leaving spaces behind. His arrival will surely settle some nerves.
