Canelo Alvarez is coming in with a highly anticipated fight against Edgar Berlanga this September. The bout is already set up for a controversial fight date, clashing with Dana White‘s UFC. To add to that, the undercards were recently revealed and it could be a major clash in the combat sports sphere this Mexican Independence Day.
PBC recently announced the undercard lineup for the Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga showdown. Fans will get to see boxing veterans Erislandy Lara and Danny Garcia clash as the co-main event. Meanwhile, Canelo’s former opponent Caleb Plant will fight Trevor McCumby for the WBA interim supermiddleweight title. The clash between Rolly Romero and Manuel Jaimes also made it on the list.
This fight is scheduled for September 14 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The date of the Canelo vs. Berlanga fight coincides with UFC 306 which has led to a scheduling conflict. This is because the UFC CEO has aimed for a one-and-done multi-million dollar mega project that very same night at the ‘Sphere’. Dana White has criticized MGM for what he perceived as disrespect to the UFC by booking another major combat sports event on the same night in Las Vegas.
Canelo will defend his unified WBC, WBA, and WBO Super Middleweight world titles against Berlanga who is yet to taste his first professional defeat. The Puerto Rican is currently the WBA’s No. 1-ranked mandatory contender. However, Canelo has faced criticism for allegedly avoiding tougher competitors like David Benavidez.
Who does Canelo Alvarez consider as the hardest hitter in his boxing career?
Canelo Alvarez is famous for his extraordinary skills in evading punches. But what about when the boxer gets caught by some powerful hits in the ring? Who has hit the Mexican star in the 65 professional fights he has had so far?
Alvarez recently made an appearance on the YouTube channel Sway’s Universe. During their conversation, Canelo surprised everyone by stating that fellow Mexican compatriot, Jaime Munguia could have been the one who hit him the hardest. However, ‘Saul’ backtracked from his statement and revealed that it was James Kirkland who hit him with the most powerful punches.
I think what I felt the most was Kirkland...if he hits me in the head, he's going to f**k me up.Canelo Alvarez on Sway’s Universe
Kirkland’s career has been marked by impressive knockout power. He boasts a professional record of 34 wins (30 by knockout) and 3 losses. However, he is no longer around in the professional boxing sphere. After his last fight in December 2020, Kirkland retired from professional boxing.
