Jannik Sinner, for the first time in his career, lost four consecutive sets in Grand Slams. After his dramatic five-set defeat in the second round of the French Open, Sinner dropped the first set during his match against Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round of Wimbledon on Sunday (June 29).
But Sinner bounced back and clinched the second set. At 2-2, with Sinner leading 30-15 in the third set, the four-time Grand Slam singles champion suffered a frightening fall, and blood was seen seeping through his white Nike shoes. He received the treatment, and continued.

Sinner then raced to 5-2 in the fifth set before eventually securing a spot in the second round with scores of 4-6, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-3. The defending champion will next be facing Nuno Borges, who defeated Tristan Boyer.

In last year’s Wimbledon, Sinner beat arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz in the final, winning his second title on grass. Sinner also stopped the seven-time Major champion from completing the hat-trick of Wimbledon final wins.

Alcaraz is not playing because of a wrist injury. Sinner, who lost to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of this year’s Australian Open, will face the Serb at SW19 if they both progress to the semifinals.
Jannik Sinner on the blood on his right foot
Jannik Sinner assured everyone that although the fall was nasty, he did not suffer a serious injury. During the on-court interview after the match, Sinner also revealed whether he suffered from nerves, as it was his first match of the tournament.

No no. I’m good. It just seems much worse than it is. I’m actually very surprised they let me keep playing because…all white, it turned into a little red. It’s just a nail. I didn’t want to disturb Miomir. I think we both had a good rhythm. It was a great match from both of us. I didn’t want to take any time. It’s all good. Thank you.
Sinner is chasing his sixth title of the season in the grass-court Major. After his defeat at the Australian Open and the Qatar Open, the World No.1 lifted five back-to-back titles in Masters 1000s, winning in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, and Rome.
It was a very, very different feeling. There’s a lot of nerves when you go down the stairs behind the court. Also, knowing mentally it’s such a prestigious court and such a historical court. Coming back here as defending champion means a lot to me. Even though every year is different, and every year can be very, very tough. So, first of all, very happy to win the first one. Of course, we will try to aim for a couple of improvements for the next match. But I can be very, very happy.
Jannik Sinner added
The two grass-court titles that Sinner clinched were last year’s Wimbledon and the 2024 Halle Open. Sinner chose not to feature in any warm-up event on grass before heading to Wimbledon.
Sinner could ace rising star Rafael Jodar if they both reach the fourth round. It was at the 2025 Wimbledon that the 24-year-old last clinched a Grand Slam title.
Carlos Alcaraz stopped him from defending his title at the US Open, and he lost to Novak Djokovic in this year’s Australian Open semifinals and to Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round of the French Open. The Argentine ace, in fact, ended Sinner’s 30-match winning streak that started in Indian Wells.
Sinner was on the verge of an easy win, but he suffered severe cramps and ended up losing games one after the other. The last man to defend the Wimbledon crown was Alcaraz (winning in 2023 and 2024 by defeating Djokovic both times).
