Six-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker has often found himself in murky waters. Back in April 2022, Becker received a two and a half years prison sentence in the UK for bankruptcy offenses, however, he served just eight months before being deported to Germany. He was charged with concealing £2.5 million in assets and loans to avoid paying debts after being declared bankrupt in 2017.
Becker was found guilty of four charges under the Insolvency Act 1986 and was found to have illegally transferred huge amounts of money and hidden assets after being declared bankrupt. Speaking to Suddeutsche Zeitung Magazin about his difficult time in prison, the 57-year-old remarked:
This endlessness eats away at your soul and boils your mind. You quickly realize that prisons are actually controlled by prisoners. Talking to my wife on the phone was my lifeline and the only way I could be myself. By October, I was sleeping in my tracksuit and socks. Some nights it was so cold in my cell that I slept in two jackets and two pairs of socks, wrapping a towel around my head. I lost seven kilos in the first four weeks…
He was imprisoned at HMP Wandsworth in South London, and eventually transferred to HM Prison Huntercombe in Oxfordshire, a facility used to detain foreign criminals. Becker further added:
Gambling was stupid and reckless of me, and I owed €700 to Romanian prisoners. Then they came to my cell and threatened to beat me if I didn’t pay. Without the help of a friend who paid the debt via bank transfer, I would be a different person today.
Although the experience still haunts him, Becker has made much effort to move on since his release. In 2023, he was the subject of two documentaries- Boom! Boom! The World vs. Boris Becker, and Boris Becker: The Rise and Fall.
He has been spotted at numerous tennis tournaments over the past years and also gives his take and analysis on modern day tennis. Becker and his third wife Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro, are also expecting their first child together.
Boris Becker believes that Novak Djokovic cannot win a 25th Grand Slam title
Boris Becker has stated that he doesn’t see Novak Djokovic winning his 25th Grand Slam anytime in the future. The German’s remarks come at a time when tennis is dominated by six-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz and four-time Grand Slam Jannik Sinner.
The duo have reached the finals of the last three Grand Slams and shared the last eight Grand Slam titles between themselves. During a conversation on the Becker-Petkovic podcast, the German said:
I think, now he’s admitted that he can’t realistically win a Grand Slam because of his age and the strength of the youngsters [Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner]. What exactly does that mean? Does that mean he’ll stop at some point? Do you have any idea when that could be? Do you think he’s playing a full Grand Slam year?

At 38, Djokovic reached the semifinals of all the four Grand Slams this season, which is a remarkable feat. At his age he is still able to overpower younger opponents in their prime, however, his biggest obstacles are Alcaraz and Sinner.
With time, Djokovic’s age and physical capabilities are only diminishing while Sinner and Alcaraz are improving in their game. The Serbian is barely playing outside of Grand Slams now but is in no mood to retire anytime soon. He still has the hunger and has often expressed his wish to compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
