In Short
  • Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have won a combined nine Grand Slam titles since 2024.
  • Boris Becker warns that Novak Djokovic remains a formidable contender in Grand Slam events.
  • Dominic Thiem believes Alcaraz could surpass Djokovic's record if he maintains his enjoyment of the game.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have been dominating Grand Slam events since the 2024 season, combining for 9 titles. They first met in a Grand Slam final at the 2025 Roland Garros and then went on to feature in the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open as well.

But the streak of Alcaraz-Sinner Major final was ended by Novak Djokovic when he registered a five-set win over the Italian ace in the semifinal of this year’s Australian Open, stopping him from defending his title. The Serb, however, couldn’t repeat the result against Alcaraz in the final.

And this is why Boris Becker has warned the two top players to be wary of the 24-time Grand Slam champion in Grand Slam events.

First of all, let me express my admiration and respect for what Alcaraz and Sinner are doing, having just shared nine Grand Slam titles between them. And Carlos is only 22, and Jannik is 24. But, on the other hand, I really want to see other players come and challenge them. I’m thinking of [Alexander] Zverev. He served for the match in the Australian Open semi-finals against Alcaraz. It was very close.

Boris Becker told reporters at an event for the Laureus Awards.

Djokovic has yet to taste Grand Slam glory since the 2023 US Open. Last year, he reached three Major semifinals, losing to Alcaraz at the US Open and to Sinner at the French Open and Wimbledon.

And we mustn’t forget Djokovic. As long as he’s playing, we must never forget him. He operates in a rather unique sphere, with his record of 24 Grand Slam titles. He was even in the final in Melbourne. Truly, as long as he is a professional tennis player, he will be a force to be reckoned with.

Boris Becker added

Djokovic was last seen in action at the Indian Wells Masters, where Jack Draper beat him in the fourth round. He then skipped the Miami Open and the Monte-Carlo Masters. Djokovic has confirmed that he will be participating in the Madrid Open, the main draw of which is set to start on April 21.

Dominic Thiem thinks Carlos Alcaraz can surpass Novak Djokovic’s record

If Carlos Alcaraz continues to smile for the rest of his career, then he can surpass Novak Djokovic’s 24 Grand Slam titles record, believes Dominic Thiem. What the Austrian meant by this is that Alcaraz produces his best tennis when he enjoys competing.

He had some weeks where he was not playing that well, and you could see that the smile was gone a bit, that he was not feeling that great on court, and straight away the results went down…If he can keep that for many more years, he’s a contender to maybe even beat Novak’s Grand Slam record. I think this is the first time that a player who’s winning that much is also enjoying what he is doing so obviously.

Dominic Thiem said on the BTA Podcast

Alcaraz has already won two titles this season: the Australian Open by beating Djokovic and the Qatar Open by beating Arthur Fils. After his defeat to Jannik Sinner in the Monte-Carlo Masters final, Alcaraz played at the Barcelona Open, but an injury forced him to withdraw from his round of 16 match against Tomas Machac.

Had Alcaraz won, he would have dethroned Sinner from the top of the rankings table. Sinner reclaimed his position after his Monte Carlo win. There’s uncertainty over both Sinner and Alcaraz’s participation at the Madrid Open. Neither of them has any point to defend in the Spanish capital.
