Gervonta Davis has positioned himself as one of the top boxers of this generation. He is a well-recognized name in the world of boxing. And he stands as an undefeated multi-division boxer, currently holding the WBA lightweight title. Most recently he fought Ryan Garcia in a highly anticipated matchup. The fight was a highly entertaining event and Davis gave Garcia his first-ever career loss. Garcia took a knockout shot in the seventh round and could not continue marking the end of the fight.
For some time now, Gervonta Davis has found himself subject to comparisons with the legendary heavyweight, Mike Tyson. These comparisons stem from his formidable reputation and devastating knockout abilities. However, according to Davis, the association with Tyson does not hold as much significance as some might assume. Gervonta Davis said this in a recent interview:
I think I'm a boxer-puncher. Mike Tyson was a brawler. Mike Tyson's got power and skills, I feel as though I have the whole package.
According to Davis, his boxing skills surpass those of Tyson. He saw himself as a versatile fighter, differentiating himself from the brawler image often attributed to Tyson. While acknowledging Mike Tyson‘s skill, he firmly asserted his position as a technically superior boxer.
This isn’t the first time that Gervonta Davis has been linked to Mike Tyson. Instead, he is often more closely associated with another all-time great, Floyd Mayweather. Floyd went 50-0 undefeated in his entire career. He is known for his defensive brilliance and technical mastery that prevented him from taking punishment in the ring. This contrasted with the image of a knockout artist that often accompanies Davis. Despite his knockout power, Davis took pride in his defensive abilities and saw himself as more of a counterpuncher, setting him apart from Tyson.
Ryan Garcia wants a rematch against Gervonta Davis but this time with a twist
Ryan Garcia wanted to step back into the boxing ring for a rematch with Gervonta Davis. However, having tasted his first defeat, Garcia will put some fresh conditions in place.
During their electrifying throwdown, Gervonta Davis outskilled Ryan Garcia and landed a clean, powerful straight left to Ryan Garcia’s midsection. The hit took effect and Garcia took a knee and never stood up. This secured Davis his win in their thrilling contest.
Recently in an interview with FightHubTV, Garcia issued an invitation to Gervonta Davis for a rematch. However, wants a rehydration clause in place this time. He revealed the motivation behind his decision to face Davis for the first time. Garcia was striving to make a significant impact in the world of boxing. This compelled him to challenge Gervonta Davis in the first place.
