Throughout 2023, Gervonta “Tank” Davis has made it clear that he believed he has become the “face of boxing.” This became a reality after his epic victory over fellow boxing superstar Ryan Garcia. However, boxing fans hailed Canelo Alvarez as the face of boxing after his victory over Jermell Charlo in their undisputed clash.
Recently, Gervonta Davis was involved in a verbal altercation with a critic, and Davis responded to his criticism despite the conventional wisdom that trolls should not be interacted with. A critic stated that Davis was not the face of boxing; Davis replied that he was the only face of boxing. In addition, Davis said, “This boxing shit mine, buddy..f*ck a weight class, I am the face”. Furthermore, the critic dared to question Davis’s potential outside his weight class, eliciting Tank’s immediate response. Subsequently, Davis sent a threatening text message over Twitter stating, “Shut up before I have my homie to f*ck ya little ugly a*s gf.”
The debate started because of Alvarez’s skillful performance against Charlo, which solidified Alvarez’s status as a champion and great fighter. Before the match, many critics had begun to doubt Alvarez because of his consecutive underwhelming performances in his fights. However, the surgery Alvarez had after a wrist injury affected his performance inside the ring.
Subsequently, Alvarez’s high motivation to prove his doubters wrong led him to win the bout. Hence, people currently hailed Alvarez as the face and king of boxing, which Davis disagreed with. They are both great fighters in their own right. Davis is entering his prime and could rule boxing for years.
