Ryan Garcia vs. Gervonta Davis was one of the biggest boxing events in recent years. The 12-round boxing bouts between two lightweight sensations brought excitement to many. Recently, reports emerged that the event broke the live gate record. The PPV live gate broke the record set by the Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov fight at UFC 229.
Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov marked the return of the Irish Superstar after he was away from the sport for two years. The grudge match between the two had a good story, bad blood, and a great build-up. Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated Conor McGregor via submission in the fourth round. After everything was accounted for, the event did 2.4 million PPV buys and a live gate of $17.2 million. The live gate collection amount remained the highest until the Garcia vs. Davis fight.
Meanwhile, Davis vs. Garcia is one of the biggest events in recent boxing memory. Both fighters called each other out for a long time and their fight finally happened in 2023. Davis defeated Garcia with a brutal body shot in the seventh round of the fight. The fight brought 1.2 million PPV buys and a staggering $22.8 million gate revenue. With the $22.8 million, it becomes the biggest live gate in Nevada, breaking the record of Khabib vs. McGregor in 2018.
While it did not generate more PPV buys, the fight surely generated more gate revenue than Conor vs. Khabib. In his press conferences, Dana White always stated that boxing is a dying sport. However, recent numbers from the Davis vs Garcia event indicate boxing still has much to offer if the top fighters can compete against each other..
Mexican Boxing champions slam Ryan Garcia for giving up
Ryan Garcia recently lost his undefeated record after losing to Gervonta Davis. Davis knocked out Ryan in the seventh round of the bout, extending his record to 29-0. While many appreciated the boxers for accepting the fight, some believe Garcia did not try hard enough to succeed.
Mexican Boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez and heavyweight boxer Andy Ruiz slammed Garcia for giving up too early. Julio Cesar Chavez thought Ryan Garcia quit despite not getting hit too hard. Chavez further added he won’t watch any more Ryan Garcia fights. “It wasn’t even a punch, where he hit him, what time he hit him. I’m not going to watch him anymore. I don’t want to watch any more Ryan Garcia fights, count me out,” said Chavez.
Meanwhile, Andy Ruiz believes Garcia should have risked his life for this big opportunity. He said, “I felt like he gave up. He should have did what he has to do to win the fight. I still feel that Ryan should have done more, man. He should have risked his life more.” While many Mexican fighters believe Ryan gave up, some think he did great and lost due to the rehydration clause. That said, boxing fans look forward to seeing how Ryan bounces back after his first career loss.
