Jermall Charlo put on a show in his return to boxing after being inactive for a year and a half. Furthermore, Charlo won the 10-round fight by a unanimous decision over Jose Benavidez Jr. Although Benavidez Jr. was picked as a worthy opponent for Charlo, he was expected to defeat Benavidez Jr. easily. However, some doubts amongst fans arose because of Charlo’s long break from boxing and because he missed weight.

Charlo did not make weight for the 163-pound catchweight bout and instead weighed 166.5 pounds, which was 3.5 pounds more. However, Benavidez’s camp agreed to proceed with the fight, but Jermall Charlo lost a significant portion of his fighter’s purse. Despite that, Charlo had a great fight. In addition, Charlo could have really stepped it up and taken the fight to the next level, but he didn’t seem to want to. At the post-fight interview, Charlo revealed what he told Benavidez Jr. inside the ring:

I just told him I beat his as*. I'll beat yo as*. There ain't nothin you can do.

Hence, Charlo revealed that he had foretold Benavidez Jr. that he was about to beat him up and there was nothing Benavidez Jr. could do about it.

Charlo revealed that Benavidez Jr. came to his locker room after the fight and admitted that Charlo defeated him. Additionally, the official score for the fight was 100-90, 99-91, and 98-92, in unanimous favor of Charlo.

Jermall Charlo’s main reason for taking a break from boxing

Charlo hasn’t been in the ring for more than a year and a half. His last fight was in June 2021, when he won a split decision against Juan Macias Montiel. Subsequently, after that, Charlo was linked to a potential fight against Canelo Alvarez this year. However, his brother, Jermell Charlo, took the fight and lost to the Mexican star the very next month.

Across his long break, Jermall continued to be the reigning WBC middleweight champion after his fight with Montiel. The main reason for his long break was a back injury that he suffered after the Montiel fight. Additionally, one of the main reasons for his extensive break was that Charlo was dealing with mental health struggles.

Charlo also revealed that his struggles relating to his mental health hindered his training for a fight against Alvarez. However, now that Charlo has made his return to boxing, he is aiming for his fight with Alvarez again.
