Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson once offered his prediction for a potential bout between Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez. The two boxers are widely regarded as two of the most talented super-middleweights in the world. Hence, the potential matchup has become one of the most highly anticipated bouts in the sport.
Furthermore, after Benavidez’s victory over Demetrius Andrade, he has become a mandatory challenger to Alvarez for the WBC super-middleweight title. During the post-match press conference, Andrade asserted that Canelo Alvarez had been evading him for a long time. Benavidez boldly asserted that he posed the greatest threat to Alvarez and his WBC super-middleweight title.
Subsequently, the legendary heavyweight boxer Tyson also believes that Benavidez can beat Alvarez and every other boxer in his division. In an interview with Fight Hub TV, 8 months prior to the Benavidez vs. Andrade fight, Tyson stated:
His attitude. He was a little heavy-fat kid [growing up] and stuff like that, and he wanted to prove himself to the world. The greatest fighters in the world are the most insecure fighters.
Hence, Tyson stated that he would bet his money on Benavidez to beat anybody in the middleweight division. Subsequently, Tyson stated that even if Benavidez gets beat, he will still support him, but Tyson doesn’t think it’s possible.
Furthermore, Tyson stated that the main reason for his blind support for Benavidez was because he was fat and insecure. In addition, Tyson stated that all the greatest fighters are insecure and have a hunger to prove themselves.
Mike Tyson shares the reason he gave David Benavidez the name ‘The Mexican Monster’
Benavidez maintained his undefeated record of 28-0 by forcing the referee to call off the fight in Round 6. Subsequently, the fight was stopped after Andrade’s corner decided to stop the fight after Andrade took too much damage. The bout was a 10-round fight, but Benavidez’s dominance inside the ring cut the fight short.
Furthermore, Benavidez has maintained his undefeated record even after fighting formidable opponents like former IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant. Subsequently, ahead of the Benavidez vs. Plant fight, Tyson revealed why he calls Benavidez ‘The Mexican Monster.’
In an interview with ES News, Tyson stated that Benavidez is very underrated, even though he is a formidable boxer. Subsequently, Tyson stated that he would personally be afraid to fight Benavidez if he were in his division.
