Boxing is one of the most well-known and famous combat sports that has existed for almost a century. It is an exciting sport but bears several consequences. Many have argued that boxing is more dangerous than MMA. This is because boxing involves being hit on the head repeatedly and being allowed 10 seconds to resume a fight. Hence, head injuries sustained during boxing matches can have devastating consequences, as was tragically seen with NDA cadet Pratham Mahale.
Mahale, a 21-year-old squadron cadet captain, was in the 145th course of the National Defense Academy. Furthermore, Mahale would graduate from the institution in November 2023, but tragedy struck before that. Mahale participated in an inter-squadron boxing championship held on October 16, 2023. Subsequently, the 21-year-old suffered a head injury while taking part in the boxing competition, and he was admitted to the Command Hospital in Pune. However, Mahale tragically lost his life on October 18, 2023, even after receiving surgery for internal head bleeding.
Boxing is a physically demanding sport that involves powerful punches to the head, increasing the risk of severe head trauma. Such injuries can result in brain damage, bleeding, and swelling, which can be life-threatening even after receiving treatment or surgery.
Hence, this unfortunate incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of athletes in contact sports. Furthermore, it highlights the need for stringent regulations and medical supervision to minimize the risk of such tragic outcomes.
The aftermath of Pratham Mahale’s tragic death
The incident has triggered a discussion about the safety measures in place during boxing matches, particularly within military institutions. While boxing carries inherent risks, it is essential to ensure proper safety protocols are followed to prevent such tragic outcomes.
After the tragedy, Mahale’s mother expressed her worries about how quickly medical treatment was given to her son after he was injured. Despite their deep sorrow and many questions, the family chose to keep faith in an institution such as the NDA. The NDA also made a statement on the tragedy and addressed how the academy is mourning their young cadet’s tragic death.
Furthermore, the NDA also performed the respective military rites for Mahale before delivering his mortal remains to the family. Subsequently, the NDA revealed that an investigation into the tragedy and the competition is being held to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
