The boxing world witnessed yet another controversial win last weekend. Devin Haney scored a unanimous win over Ukrainian fighter Vasiliy Lomachenko in their bout on 21st May. Although Devin Haney managed to defend his titles, many thought Lomachenko outworked Haney. The decision was met with boos from the audience at MGM Grand and several fighters were unhappy with it as well. Super featherweight world champion Shakur Stevenson, who was present ringside, also gave his verdict on the fight.
Vasiliy Lomachenko entered the fight as a heavy underdog against ‘The Dream’. However, Lomachenko landed more shots, had cleaner punches, and did more damage to his opponent. Devin Haney also landed some good shots while taking damage from the Ukrainian boxer. He closed out with a strong performance in the 12th round and left with two 115-113 and 116-112 on the scorecards to win via unanimous decision. Many fans and fighters expressed their disappointment regarding the results.
Super featherweight world champion Shakur Stevenson also gave his opinion on the scorecard. According to Stevenson, Lomachenko was the clear winner of the fight. “Lomachenko should be the undisputed champion, he won. He won that fight. He landed the cleaner punches, he landed the cleaner shots on Dev and he pushed the pace,” said Stevenson in the ring. Shakur wanted to have a face-off with the champion after being called out by Haney’s father. However, Devin Haney abruptly left the ring after Shakur entered the ring.
Stevenson took the opportunity and called out Devin Haney for the undisputed title. Meanwhile, Lomachenko was unimpressed with Haney’s performance and will most likely appeal the judge’s decision.

Vasiliy Lomachenko unimpressed with Devin Haney’s skills despite defeat

Undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney went head to head with former lightweight champion, Vasiliy Lomachenko, on 21st May. While Haney retained his undisputed title, many believed Lomachenko to be the better fighter. Fellow fighters and fans were frustrated with the controversial win and wanted Lomachenko to run it back with Devin Haney. While Lomachenko and his team will be appealing against the decision, the Ukrainian boxer has a message for Haney.
Vasiliy Lomachenko was severely unimpressed with Devin Haney’s performance despite the loss.“I don’t want to talk about it. All the people saw what happened today. Before, I thought he would be better. He’s a tough fighter. He’s a good fighter. But he’s not a pound-for-pound fighter,” said Lomachenko. Despite the Ukrainian fighter edging out Devin Haney, there are no signs of a rematch. As of now, Lomachenko will go back to supporting Ukraine in its tough times.
“I think I showed that I can still be in boxing. I’m in good shape now. Right now I want to go back home and support my country and support my Ukrainian Orthodox church,” said Lomachenko. Meanwhile, Shakur Stevenson stepped up inside the ring to confront Haney after the controversial win. While Stevenson was not able to have his face off, he thinks a fight with Haney will be a walk in the park.
