Despite retirement, Floyd Mayweather has not left the sport of boxing. He continues to box in exhibition bouts. Recently, he took on the grandson of mobster John Gotti. It did not go well for anyone involved. The referee stopped the bout due to unstoppable trash-talking between the fighters. It did not sit well with Gotti III as he swung at Mayweather, leading to an all-out brawl. The “Face of ESPN,” Stephen A. Smith, called out Mayweather for taking on unworthy opponents.
Smith said, “I know these exhibition matches are entertaining. I just see some of these things and this is just my personal feeling: when you’re that great and you’re that elite, not just anyone deserves to be in the ring with you, even if you are retired. Even if it is for exhibition purposes. This is not a movie, this is not Rocky III where Rocky is going against Thunderbolt or Hulk Hogan. He’s so elite, he’s so phenomenal, you don’t deserve to be in that arena with him unless you’ve earned it. So that’s just how I look at it, these exhibitions.“
Stephen A. Smith remains the most popular star on ESPN. The exhibition bout did not sit well with the star of the First Take. Smith stated that he wanted accomplished individuals to fight Mayweather in exhibition bouts. Smith did not feel that Gotti III deserved the fight against the undefeated boxer. The brawl did not affect Mayweather or Gotti III as they were escorted out of the arena.
Floyd Mayweather had one of the most outstanding careers in combat sports history. In 50 professional fights, Mayweather never tasted defeat. He defeated legendary boxers like Canelo Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao, and Oscar De La Hoya. He made over a billion dollars in career earnings and has a humongous net worth among sports athletes. Despite having a stellar career and wealth, Mayweather continues to box for unknown reasons. Hopefully, the next time, he will not encounter a brawl like he did against John Gotti III.
